Best snorkeling sites in Kauai?

Hello all. I'm in the VERY early stages of planning a March trip for a week in Kauai. Before trying to pick a part of the island to stay, I'd really appreciate suggestions on the best snorkeling locations on the island. My husband & I love to snorkel, and want to be sure to hit the best spots. Secondarily we want to do some hiking, but I'd rather house us based on the snorkeling locations.

Thanks in advance for any help here!

Hi -

Most snorkelers prefer the northshore sites - Kee and Tunnels. However, in March, the water may still be too rough there. You might want to opt for the south shore around Poipu. There should be good snorkeling t Poipu Beach Park and beaches near Kuhio Shores condos.

I recently scanned & uploaded 2 pages of the flyer I got from Seasport Divers that show the locations & gives a brief description of the sites. Use the link provided to see the album, and if wanted you can download the pages to your computer, which may require downloading a free program from AOL. Have no fear, there is no spyware or ad ware in it, or I wouldn't use the site. Copy & paste to get there.

Thanks so much, kimocat & cicopo.

kimocat, thanks for the recommendations. What months are considered safe for snorkeling on the North shore?

cicopo, I was able to get the flyer into my computer & printed out without any problems. Thank you!

Glad to hear that it worked. I hadn't thought of doing that until recently. It was very handy both while there and later when doing my trip reports. This link has the underwater photos, several of which were from snorkeling, and list where.

Hi there! I second the notion on Ke'e and Tunnels as best snorkelling spots. My boyfriend and I loved both these beaches....we were there last March...the conditions were as follows:

Ke'e: very very calm..perfect conditions

Tunnels: Started out calm in the AM...towards noon, a strong current picked up...so much so..that we ended our snorkelling.

We didn't snorkel anywhere in the east or south..because either the waves were too big..or it was raining when we were at those beaches.

dsb -

Generally, the northshore beaches are going to be best for snorkeling during the summer months. During the spring and fall, it just depends on the weather -- sometimes is OK and sometimes not. In the dead of winter, I'd figure on snorkeling down south. You also might want to keep in mind that the island is not all that big and it is not necessary to stay right by all the places you may want to try snorkeling. Consider also proximity to resurants, shops, etc and any other attractions you might want to see.

Good Luck

Snorkelling at Kee and TUnnels in March may not be possible. We've been going to Kauai that time of the year for the last 5 years. We have been able to snorkel up there from time to time, but had to really check the forecast and surf conditions before heading to the north shores to snorkel. South has been pretty good most of the time in March. We like to stay on the east side and head either direction depending on the weather.

dsb, probably the best snorkeling on the south shore is Lawai (Beach House) Beach, with Poipu second. In the winter you may be able to snorkel Poipu to the right of the sand spit. If you can get out to deeper water it can be quite good.
