Maui- Best things to do as a couple

Hi All,

Ill be in Maui in Mid August with my partner and looking for some of the best recommendations for things to do as a couple.

We love the water and will have a car to drive the island. There for a week and staying in Keihi

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Scroll down this Forum and read. We talk about activities, restaurants and such constantly.

Do you have a good travel guidebook or two? Good, real maps?

Sunset cruise is always good. we like Teralani. Also recommend the Maui Fishpond Canoe tour if you like to get out on the water. Great experience and you get to paddle the canoe! And of course sunset cocktails at any number of places -- out faves are Merriman's and Pacific'O, Monkeypod, Hula Grill.

Trilogy trip to Lanai...or Captain Steve's depending on your preferences and $$.

My husband and I love to just check out the beaches, snorkel and go to our favorite restaurants together

Couple of beach chairs, picnic food and sunset on the beach.

We love that, we are alone on Maui and able to appreciate it for its real beauty

Beaches are usually quiet around that time

We just love Merriman's for sunset cocktails on the patio followed by dinner inside. Also love breakfast at the Sea House overlooking Napili Bay. Heard they have a good happy hour too but did not get there for that. We liked Mama's Fish House for lunch (rather than dinner) to enjoy the day time view and to be able to drive there and back from the West side during the day rather than at night.

Haleakala, the Road to Hana, hikes in the Kapalua Trail system, a visit to 'Iao Valley, and a wander down to La Perouse are all things you might look at too.

Thanks all,

Our favourite things over here in Perth, Australia are being on or under the water and being in the bush.

So a mix of both. Also looking for a spot for a special romantic dinner could take place!

Hi James,

One of my favorite romantic days is spent exploring NorthWest Maui and ending with Happy Hour at Merriman’s Point Bar. It’s one of the most romantic places on Maui with a huge oceanfront deck, cozy seating around fire pit tables, very good live music, really delicious small plates, very good drinks, stunning sunsets. I wouldn’t consider a Maui stay complete without it. We make an early meal of the small plates. It works well with the time change. You can ask formthe dessert menu too. You could have dinner in the restaurant if you prefer, but we are always happy with the Point.

I’d start out the day as early as you can. Get to Kapalua Bay before 8:30 for easy parking, noncrowded beach and great snorkeling. Say hello to all the fish, turtles, octopus, nudibranches, and other lovely Kapalua residents with a snorkel on the right side of the beach as you face the ocean. You’ll see Merriman’s out on the Point across the bay.

Then talk a walk along the stunning Kapalua Coastal Trail, wander out on the lava rock point to Oneloa Beach. This one is bigger and wilder, far few people. This time of year it could be quite calm. There are other more challenging hikes in Kapalua as well if that’s your prioritiy.

Then take a drive along the coast, stopping at some beautiful spots for as long as you like, hiking, maybe snorkeling again at Honolua Bay. Or just start out at Honolua. Early morning there can be spectacular!

Other places to choose from to stop for beaches, views, hiking, food trucks... just come back to Kapalua and Merriman’s at 3:00:

DT Fleming Beach Park

Mokule’ia Beach aka Slaughterhouse

Honolua Bay overlook and be sure to walk down the “jungly” path to Honolua Bay even if not snorkeling there.

Nakalele Blowhole - don’t miss a romantic photo op at the “heart rock” here! Is the surf isn’t up, the Blowhole may not be doing much, but hike around the area for gorgeous scenery.

Ohai Trail - this is the end of the road for rental car drivers. Past this point the road is not permitted & it’s quite treacherous. So turn around here and head back to your romantic sunset at the Point.

You might just bring snacks or a packed lunch with you, or you might stop at any of several good lunch spots earlier. There are several food trucks or wagons. The purple Honolua Farms one at Honolua Bay is very good. We hear the Burger Shack near DT Fleming Beach is wonderful. You could share a burger and and adult milkshake. (It’s on my agenda next trip.) We always like to stop by the old Honolua Store too. Their mahi mahi sandwiches with pesto are very good & it’s a great places to pick up odds and ends with a bathroom break.

Of course there are lots of other places to explore on Maui and end with a romantic sunset, but this is our favorite. Hope you have a fantastic time!

For the last few years, our favorite activity has been taking a kayak and snorkel tour. Great combination of workout and snorkeling fun, as you get out to spots that are a little further from shore, but usually away from the big snorkel boats. We like going with Hawaiian Paddle Sports, who do private tours. They're more expensive, but you get to customize what you're doing (more snorkeling or more paddling, where to go, etc) and the private guide definitely shows you more than when we went on group trips.

On the opposite side of things, plan a couple's spa day. Some of the bigger hotel spas offer wonderful outdoor or open air massage experiences, along with additional facilities. Our two favorites, are on the west side, Spa Montage and the Spa at the Ritz. Both let you spend the day by their pools and spa facilities, in addition to your massage. You can think it as a free day pass to the Ritz Carlton.

For romantic dinners, I would look toward a night at Merriman's in Kapalua. Even if you don't go for the full meal, some of our favorite nights have been sitting outside at their outdoor "Point Bar" for drinks, pupus, and desserts, while watching a spectacular sunset.
