1/2 Day Trip on Hana Highway

Hi gang, it's our first trip to Maui in Feb and we both really want to do the trek along Hana Highway - however, the only day we could squeeze it in is our only 'sleep in' day of the trip.

Would it be silly to try and start the trek around noon and hope to get back by 8pm or so? We don't need to go all the way to Hana either - just want to take in some great scenery along the way.

Any suggestions for what to hit, and when to turn around would be very much appreciated!

A lot of the early morning traffic will be gone by noon, but like you said... you wouldn't have a prayer at reaching the beautiful 'Ohe'o Gulch beyond Hana (one of the only reason most folks even drive the Hana Highway in the first place).

That said, there's plenty of amazing sites on the first few miles of the drive, and Nahiku Landing (mile marker 25) makes a good turn around spot (be sure to drive down to Nahiku Landing first). Check the insider page I've created here on TA about these spots. The Garden of Eden is a wonderful stop (especially on a nice clear day). Waikamoi Forest Trail is a nice stroll through the rainforest. There are a few falls to see along the way, though nothing major (most of the good ones are beyond Hana - Waikani being the exception).

Ke'anae peninsula is a nice stop as is the Ke'anae Arboretum with it's taro gardens and painted bark eucalyptus trees.

Around MM 14 you'll get some incredible views of the Hana Highway itself, looking back over Honomanu Bay.

There are also a few Wayside Parks you might stop at. And on your way back, if you have extra time, stop at Mile Marker 2 at Twin Falls. It's not much, but it's a nice place to stroll next to a stream. Only go if the gate is open for visitors.

I don't know where you are staying ... but if you start the Hana Highway by noon you'll be fine! So you don't go all the way to Hana ... the route itself is gorgeous. Turn around by 2:30 ish and head back. Chill - stop, gawk and enjoy. You can do the 'Ohe'o Gulch later!

Stop in Paia for dinner on your way back.

Regarding conditions: sometimes the road is not a good idea if there have been heavy rains. Watch the news, newspaper or ask your concierge if you have concerns.

I have to agree with not driving the road back in the dark.

As JC mentioned, my favorite stop on the road (not including beyond Hana, which is the best part of the whole drive) was the side trip down to Nahiku Landing. It's Awesome! Then head back. If you have time, definitely go down to the Peninsula on your way back, grabbing some warm banana bread at the stand on the way down there.

This should be doable with a 12:00 departure and not having to drive back in the dark.

Enjoy - I know we did!!

Hi everyone, thanks for the ideas! What time is sunset/when does it get dark this time of year (mid-Feb) in Maui?

Definitely want to make sure we're not driving Hana Hwy in the dark...

Any other reco's for stops/turnaround points would be much appreciated.

Thanks all!

I'd recommend trying to get to Wai'anapanapa Black Sand Beach Park before you turn around. And while it does get dark on the Road early and it is curvy, rental cars DO have headlights, so as long as you take your time, you should be fine driving back after sunset. Definitely stop to see Keanae Peninsula and Nahiku, along with at least one waterfall stop at Three Bears Falls.
