Just returned from a 1 week stay in Maui, April 11-18. We flew Air Canada and United from Toronto connecting in LAX. All flights were on-time and no baggage was lost. United needs to update their planes with the in-seat entertainment system (TV). Enjoyed the Air Canada flights more being able to pick our own shows to watch.
Car rental from Avis. Scheduled for an Intermediate car and got a Pontiac G6. Very nice car with ample room, leather seats and a sunroof!
Stayed for 5 nights at the Westin Maui on their Starwood Vacations promotion (timeshare). Paid $749 and received the 5 nights, $185 towards Avis car rental and $100 resort money to spend at the Starwood properties (Sheridan, Westin, & Westin Villas). We certainly didn’t get much of a room at the Westin. Our view consisted of the parking lot and garbage dumps, right outside the elevator doors. The room itself was OK but it needs some updating (carpet torn, bugs in lights, dusty, etc.). We agreed to attend the timeshare presentation, but there certainly was not any pressure to attend. For attending we got an additional $100 resort credit and a 50% off coupon for our next stay at a Starwood property (up to 5 nights, does not include Hawaii). The presentation wasn’t too bad, actually never had been to one before. No high pressure and it took exactly 90 minutes as promised. Enjoyed the Westin’s location, close to Whaler’s Village was handy. Ate at their breakfast buffet most mornings, cost $26 each but resort certificates covered. Hard to find chairs by the pool. Checked our Hyatt and really liked their grounds and pool. Would opt to stay there next time I think.
Stayed for 1 night at the Grand Wailea. Really loved this hotel. Wasn’t cheap, but their grounds are amazing. Loved the pool area, wished we had brought our son along as we were one of the few couples without any children. Their breakfast buffet was OK, but not as big variety as the Westin’s. We did a Duo Signature massage treatment at their Spa Grande. That was super neat. You get an hour to spend soaking in their different baths, showers, saunas, etc. The massage itself was awesome too. Highly recommend it.
Stayed for 1 night at the Four Seasons Maui. Customer Service is what they thrive on and it shows. Excellent service and the room was incredible. The grounds were good, but not as “grand” as the Grand Wailea. The hotel actually felt a bit too fancy for us would have rather spent this night at the Grand. The valet parking was a nice treat (didn’t have a choice – no self-park available).
Some places we ate at: Hula Grill – ate there twice, yummy food, great smoothies, reasonable prices for Maui. Lelaini’s – pretty good too. Roy’s in Kahana – this was our “fancy” dinner. High-ish prices but very yummy and well prepared food. Cheeseburger’s at the Shops of Wailea – ate here twice. Good salads, burgers just OK I thought. Good prices for the Wailea area. Aroma D’Italia in Kehei – great local place with homemade Italian food at good prices.
Activities: Did Trilogy’s Sunrise tour to Lanai. Super service and food. Didn’t do the van tour of the island. Saw wild spinner dolphins from the beach in Lanai and whales from the boat. Wasn’t too impressed with the snorkelling, very murky water but perhaps didn’t go out far enough. If you tend to get seasick, this is NOT the trip for you. The water was quite rough for our 2 hour return sail to Lahaina. My husband felt VERY sick and had to throw up over the side of the boat. A couple other guests threw up as well. For myself, I was fighting the urge the entire time. It was much worse when every time we saw whales, they stopped the boat, therefore the rocking increased. We kept hoping for no more whale sightings after the first stop. Trilogy did prepare us by offering ginger pills and motion sickness pills at lunch. Neither which helped much for us.
Saw Warren & Annabelle’s – Fantastic show. Didn’t order the food package but came at 6 pm for desert and drinks. The ghost piano part is cheesy and didn’t seem to fit with Warren’s show. Warren is incredible. Very funny, entertaining and amazing magic tricks. Would see again.
