Maui vs St John USVI

My wife and I spent a week in Maui in May and really enjoyed the trip and the Hyatt Regency but the 15hr flight from South Florida was brutal, even in 1st class. For our next excursion we are looking at renting a villa on St John which is only a 2.5hr flight from S.Fl. I got a bit stir crazy in the hotel room at the Hyatt as my wife would enjoy relaxing and reading so I felt a villa might better suit me. Any of you Maui fans been to St John? I wonder how they compare.

Cheers,

Headfirst

(cuz I was born that way)

Just for flight reasons alone I would choose St John. That is the feeling we get when we have to fly to Florida from the West coast of Canada, long day, long flight, and then the time change. Which is why we go to Maui & Mexico than Florida and southern Caribbean, I do envy you folks with the travel opportunites you have.....

Cheers

Yes, have been to St. John many times. Have stayed at The Westin there and also Coconut Coast Villas (coconutcoast.com). My friend was married on Hawksnest beach there and he stayed at Gallows Point overlooking Cruz Bay...beautiful. St. John is a great place with wonderful beaches, nice restaurants (The Lime Inn for lobster...trust me) and plenty to do (Duffy's Loveshack used to be a fun bar there...a short walk from Cruz bay.) Definitely do a charter from Cruz bay over to White Bay, Jost Van Dyke, BVI to see the most beautiful beach on Earth, in my opinion and the number one beach bar in the world...The Soggy Dollar Bar. (soggydollar.com)

BUT, it's not in the same playing field as Maui. Maui has much more to choose from in the way of entertainment, food, beaches, etc. Don't get me wrong. I love St. John and plan to go back soon. It's just a different "feel" than when you get off the plane in Hawaii. For me, the 10 hour flight from the East coast is worth it when you get there vs 3.5 hours to St. Thomas an then the ferry to St. John. Just my opinion. Hope this helps.

Will this be for just one week? Also in May? I could stay one week on St. John -- not longer. I like to have more to do if we're there longer -- even if we never actually get up and do it! LOL

We used to take Caribbean cruises and stay St. Thomas years ago. The V.I. Territory is not like Hawaii, which is a State.

When does hurricane season start? Did it start early this year: in May? (Not that the V.I. area gets hit a lot.)

Why is it 15 hours to Maui from Florida? We fly out of Chicago -- used to fly AA direct to Maui (cancelled two years ago), then flew direct to Honolulu (cancelled for 2009). It was 9 hours out; 8 on the return. United still has direct flights out of ORD.

We flew on Delta and used sky miles for the tix. When you do that, you almost NEVER get the best flights. We flew from Ft. Lauderdae to Atlanta, to LA, to HNL and the next day flew to Maui on Hawaiian. Looooong trip.

To answer your other question, we'll prolly spent 8 to 10 days in October or Nov as hurricane season winds down.

go in Nov rather than Oct...a lot of restaurants on St John will still be closed or just reopening during October

Maui v St John USVI: you ought not to try to compare the two (2 totally different vacation styles). St John is a very laid-back, natural haven with fantastic beaches (in ways, it's more similar to Kauai than Maui) with limited commercialism. Snorkeling (my fav island activity) on St John blows away Maui. With that being said, I'm going on a 2nd visit to Maui in August ;-D.

Since you're planning on staying there 8-10 days, I strongly encourage you to do as MauiMaiTai suggests and visit Jost Van Dyke, BVI (I have to concur that White Bay is the most beautiful beach I have ever experienced yet) and Soggy Dollar Bar is killer! You can visit JVD as part of a BVI day trip (including the Baths on Virgin Gorda) on a few boating excursions. I can rec New Horizons II from a past trip in Nov 06.

We have been to Oahu, Kauai, New Providence (Bahamas), Jamaica and St Lucia. Comparrisons?

Soccer, football (American) and baseball, when compared, are all played with a ball. There the comparrison stops. Different ball, rules, playing field, uniforms, scoring and, most important, FANS.

Islands are different in similar ways. All are surrounded by water. Different terrain, beaches, water, food, distances from home, pricing, resorts, people, weather and, most important, FANS!

I'm going to Maui in Nov. Have not been there yet. I am sure it will be different. So many islands and so little time.

To steal from Will Rogers, I never met an island I did't like.

Just my two cents, Dutch
