Snorkeling question

We are used to Kauai and being able to snorkel right off the beaches......

What is snorkeling like in maui? can we snorkel off beaches or do you need to take a boat tour to reach snorkel locations?

Thanks!

Much like Kauai, when the weather cooperates and the near shore waters are clear, the snorkeling from the beach is excellent. Enter on a sandy patch & snorkel near the rocks where the fish hang out.

If you hit a rainy time the near shore waters are likely to be murky and the snorkeling not so good. Then you might need to jump on a boat to get you where the waters are more clear & the snorkeling is better.

We just got back last week. We found snorkeling to be much better on Maui. We stayed at the Mana Kai in Kihei and snorkeled several times from their beautiful beach. We also really enjoyed the snorkeling at Wailea Beach. There are several places within 10 minutes of this area that have terrific snorkeling. The surf in Kauai was not cooperative in most places we tried. We did have a decent experience at Lawai Beach and at Anini.

snorkeling is our favorite thing to do, so want to make sure mauai can deliver or we might go to kauai again...

We did Kauai last year after a number of years on Maui. We enjoyed Kee, Tunnels and Prince Kuhio in Kauai but Maui snorkeling was equally good. We stay in Kihei and enjoy all the South beaches, Ulua, Maui Prince, Makena, etc.. Best in mornings and if surf is not up too much--decreases visibility. Check out Maui Reavealed.

The snorkeling around Maui is much better than Kauai!! Shore snorkeling is very popular. This time of year it would be best to try the south shores.

If you would like to see turtles, your best bet would be to go to Maluaka Beach which sits at the base of the Maui Prince Hotel. As you look toward the ocean, head to your left. There is lots of coral and lava shelves where the turtles hang out. Ulua Beach next to the Wailea Marriott is also a good place to snorkel. Or you could head further south to such places as Ahihi Cove or Moanakala (the dumps).

If you are west or north, you could try Kahekili Beach Park (airport beach) or further north, Napili Bay or Kapalua Bay.

Conditions can change daily and you may have to travel a bit. Have fun and happy snorkeling!!

We saw turtles snorkeling from the beautiful beach in front of the Mana Kai Resort, and from Wailea beach. There were probably a dozen at Wailea.

I guess the snorkeling is supposed to be good in Kauai in the summer months, but it is too dangerous even to swim at many places in the winter. Ke'e was completely closed when we were there. The only places we snorkeled on Kauai were Lawai Beach and Anini Beach. Both were just OK compared to the places on Maui.
