Is a rental car a "must" in Maui?

Hi

I will be staying in Kaanapali for 5 days.

Is a car essential?

I would like to see Volcanoe, go ziplining, sailing - do tour operators on West side pick you up from your Hotel?

What is public bus system like?

Thanks

you really need a car --- dont know of any tour operators that do pick ups---

although im sure there may be some

bus system is not the way to see the island

how are you getting to/from airport to your hotel ---- a taxi round trip will just about cover the cost of a car rental

Uh, let's see, YES !! You'll want a car unless you plan on staying at your hotel the entire time. Some tour operators will pick you up like if you want to see the sunrise on Haleakala or take a ride down the road to Hana. They will not pick you up for the zipline or boat tours. The bus is gonna take forever and won't get you to where you want to be on a timely basis. Drive and enjoy, Maui is relatively rural outside of the resort areas and doesn't lend itself to public transportation.
