recommend nice resort

Can anyone recommend a nice resort on the beach for anniversary couple with lanai, around $200, for 2nd or 3rd week of September?

Makena Beach and Golf Resort if you truly want to stay at a resort. There are a number of condos right on the beach. Hale Pau Hana is a nice condo complex in South Maui, right on the beach.

Not a resort but Condo that fits your list: Kihei Surfside and right next door is the Mana Kai Resort. Both are right on the water and far enough from Kihei Road as to not hear any traffic noise. Surfside will be better rates. Try Rosies rentals: here is a link to one of the really nice units that has availability in the first two weeks in Sept.

thank you for taking the time to look these places up for me. I will look in to them. Would really like to stay in a nice resort for maybe 3 nights and then a condo for the other nights so it will be cheaper. Any ideas? How about in the Kihei area?

Aloha,

If you are only staying a week, you will have trouble getting good rates at a condo for only a few nights. It will also increase your cost as you'll pay a cleaning fee for those few nights that would be the same cost if you were in the place all week. This is presuming you rent privately and not thru a management company, since those don't charge cleaning fees (e.g. Outrigger, Aston, etc.).

Also, if you are looking at the time around the 19th of September-that date is the Maui Marathon. It will eat a lot of condos and cars here, so you need to get cracking and decide soon.

On the West side, look at Maui Kaanapali Villas (great beach, restaurant on site, nice pools and lovely grounds), maybe also the Honua Kai, Mahana, Maui Kai, Papakea, Kaanapali Shores. All of these are oceanside--no road to cross to get to the water. Of them, MKV has the best beach, then the others as listed from next to worst.

If you decide to split the trip--I'd do it the other way around-five nights in a condo, then two in the resort. It wouldn't feel like "work" that way (going the other way around might be a bummer for you).

IMO it's not worth provisioning a condo for less than a week. You'll get a better rate for a week's stay too.

Some of the places mentioned are beachfront in South Kihei: Hale Pau Hana, Kihei Surfside and Mana Kai Maui. September is a shoulder season. You might find a deal at Wailea Ekahi or Elua.

Two newish condos in the area are The Palms in Wailea and Maui Kamaole in South Kihei.

Makena Beach Resort is older but still nice, if you want a hotel.

I am a former salesperson for the Maui Prince Hotel, which is now under different owners and new named, Makena Beach Resort and Golf Course. Aside from this option, try checking the Wailea Marriott and the Grand Wailea. These two hotels are significantly larger than the one in Makena, but it wouldn't hurt to try them out for pricing. I am also a former manager at the Wailea Marriott property when it was known as the Maui Inter-Continental Resort. This property is oceanfront, but beaches are off to the side, accessed via a walking path.
