Trip Report July 2011

Let's try this again. Tried from the IPad and it just wasn't working right. Left Chicago on Sunday 7/17 on United non-stop. Flight was fine and nothing out of the ordinary. Will be here until Weds 7/27 at 11pm.

Sunday 7/17 - Landed at about 1:30pm and had a resident friend on the flight so we gave him a ride home to Maalaea before heading for the condo in Honokowai (own at Hono Koa). Drive was beautiful as always. Checked in and then headed out for what I call foo-foos & pupus. Pool bar at Sands of Kahana. Like this location because of the real chairs at the bar. The bartender is actually in a 'pit' so he can remain level. Happy hour Mai Tai for 3.50 and pork taco for 2.00 (ok but not great). Nice view and way to start the trip. Picked up supplies for the adult libations at the Tradewinds across the street and back to the lanai. Had one and then the time change kicked in so it was off to bed.

Monday? - woke up really early and discussed heading up for the Haleakala sunrise but decided against the cold. 'Maybe later' We'd end up saying that many times in the next few days.

Monday 7/18 - Woke up again at about 6am. Perfect timing to get to the Gazebo before the crowds!! We got there at 7 and there was no line at all. Took in the views and DH settled into a chair to watch the Napili Bay and Molokai while I stood in line. Ended up being 4th in line by that time. Boy did it grow quick! By the time they opened at 7:30 the line was crawling up the stairs. Split Eggs Benedict and Banana MacNut pancakes. Good stuff! That cream topping on the pancakes is heavenly! Next stop was Safeway for condo provisions. Pool time and lunch back at the condo on the lanai. DH always laughs at me when I pick up little mayonaise packets during the year but he certainly appreciates them on island. More lounging and then dinner at David Paul's Island Grill. Did a review of that when we got back. Here I'll just say the food was exceptional, service wonderful and view very nice. Don't expect any aloha from the chef though.

Enough for now - it's lunch time in Maalaea!!

Tuesday 7/19 - Want to go to the blowhole? Maybe later. Upcountry? Maybe later. Catching the theme here? It was a glorious lazy day split between the lanai watching the ocean/boats and the pool. Have I mentioned beautiful, beautiful Maui yet? Just can't get enough of it. Old Lahaina Luau for the very first time. Was pleasantly surprised that the tables only sat eight each. You're escorted up to the buffet which really makes it nicer than the hotel cattle calls. Food was good and the show was nice. Wouldn't hestitate to go back if the opportunity comes up but we decided that Feast at Lele is much more our style. Took AB Taxi each way so we coud indulge in the free cocktails. They had some really interesting foo-foos. I stuck with the Little Nita and DH was involed with the Honey Girl. Hmmm... Should I be jealous??

Off to the pool again... more to come!!

Hoages - long time no read! Thanks for the report. Love the "manana" attitude. No wait - that's Cabo. Oh well, glad to see you're embracing Maui Time!

Thanks everyone. I'm thinking that 'Maybe next year' will start in another day or so. For now I'm back from the pool, sitting on my oceanfront lanai in Maalaea with an adult libation and Iz on the CD. Does it get any better?

So, where was I??

Weds - Date? What's a date? I'm having a hard enough time keeping track of the day of the week. The Plantation House with it's stunning views down the mountain, fresh pineapple and yummy eggs benedict was calling. Declared this an alcohol free day so no bloody marys. Contunued along the Kahekili Highway after breakfast. The views are awesome. Took the high road stroll out to see the Nakele Blowhole. It was sporadic but got in a view good blows. I forgot how strong the winds are out here!! Went less than a mile further and did the u-turn. Been there, done that taking the road all the way around and it will never happen again. I know there's a rental car out there somewhere with my fingernails still embedded in the dash!! Stopped at Honolua Bay and yeah the cats are out! OK - need a shave ice fix so let's head to Ululani's in Lahaina. Needed a biology break so we found ourselves in Lahaina Prime Rib & Fish. What the heck! Split an order of fish tacos and tried out the Mai Tai. Not bad at all. Did manage to stop for that shave ice before heading back to the condo pool. Dinner was really low key. Based on recommendations here we went to Honokowai Okazuya for the first time for take out. Didn't remember the advice and ordered way too much food. DH had panko crusted mahi mahi which was good but not the best choice. I had the chicken katsu which was great. We grabbed a menu, wrote some notes and stuck it in the suitcase for next time. Only one entree to split and it'll be the combo plate. A little wine on the lanai with dinner and it was yet another perfect day on Maui.

Thursday - Actually had to set the alarm just to be sure. Ended up we didn't need it - that time change is still leading to early rises. Trilogy Kaanapali snorkel cruise today - thus the yeah yesterday that the cats were out!! Loaded from the beach in front of the Kaanapali Beach Hotel at 8am. It was a little rough on the way over and a couple of girls on the front trampoline got bounced about. Honolua Bay was calm and the snorkelling was great. DH even made it into the water!!! Thanks everyone who responded to my thread on this a while back. He's mobility challenged and getting out of the water was difficult but he did it with a big assist from Eric. The entire crew was great with him. The cat moved to the next bay south after lunch. I think someone called it Slaughterhouse. It was pretty good but not like Honolua. Nice to have 2 stops. Sailed back to Kaanapali beach and arrived sometime between 1:30 and 2:00. Relaxed on the lanai for a while with more cocktails. We weren't really hungry so decided on more foo-foos and pupus. This time we went to Roy's Kahana Grill. Another first time on this one. It's amazing how each trip still brings firsts. There's just so much to do here!! Had the Canoe pupu which was great and followed up with the Garlic Shrimp. Ended with the Hawaiian S'mores. They were oh so goey with marshmallow and the peanut butter mixed in was great. No wonder they've been voted best dessert multiple times. Based on this brief stop, we'll be looking to do the full dinner here on a future trip!
