Trilogy Lanai trip snorkel question

We will be heading to Maui in a few weeks and wanted to go on the Trilogy trip to Lanai. On the website, it says "guided snorkeling". Are we able to snorkel on our own or do we have to follow someone.

We had a bad experience in Mexico where we had to follow a clueless guy around in the water. He did not know what he was doing and we ended up seeing just a bunch of rocks and fighting the current. We don't want a repeat of that incident as it was a waste of our money.

They just had some crew out in the water on surfboards keeping an eye on the snorkelers and giving advice...lovely day!
