Trip Report 3/4 - 3/9

We had a great trip despite the stormy weather. The keys were being flexible and having a good attitude. Not good beach/pool/snorkeling conditions but could still experience the sights across the entire island. We stayed in S Maui at the Wailea Marriott for 2 nights and in W Maui at the Maui Kai for 3 nights.

Trip Highlights (in order we saw them due to location, weather)

Wailea (beautiful, well landscaped area)

Wailea walking path (easy, scenic views of coast and hotel grounds)

Whale watching (from path, W Maui scenic lookout, Maui Kai)

Marriott restaurant (surprisingly very good)

Big Beach (best beach on Maui)

Iao State Park (easy, quick, nice scenic views)

Waihee Ridge Trail (great hike, go when W Maui is clear)

Drive along N shore of W Maui (very scenic but narrow roads)

Haleakala (missed sunrise due to weather but stilll great views)

Paia (cute town - stopped for lunch and breakfast, good food)

Lahaina (a little touristy but worth a stroll, great Banyan tree)

Road to Hana (raging waterfalls, road closed after we passed)

Waianapanapa Black Sand beach (unique scenery, worth the stop)

Pipiwai Trail (great hike through exotic bamboo forest)

Seven Sacred Pools (easy 0.5 mile walk to great coast/waterfall view)

Jennifer's tacos (roadside stand by Kaupo - best tacos ever had)

Drive along S shore of E Maui (scenic, sunny, narrow, bumpy road)

View from Maui Kai (very close to water)

Honokowai Okazuya Deli (great take out fresh fish at a good value)

Kapalua Coastal Trail (easy walk along scenic lava coast)

Wow, you covered a lot of ground in a short time! I don't think I get that many places in 2 weeks!

Great report. Can't think of much (if anything) you missed. I noticed, though, you omitted sleep. LOL

Our next trip is in September. We plan to stay twice as long and do half as much!!!

We stopped at the local natural foods grocery store and picked up something from the deli. It was very good and we were able to eat it outside to enjoy our moment of sun. We topped it off with some excellent gelato and sorbetto from another local place. We stopped again on the way to Hana and had breakfast at a coffee shop and had another good experience (was crowded with locals as well).

Well when it is raining out most of the time, it made more sense to hit the road and see different parts of the island. Maui is actually pretty easy to get around (if you can handle some narrow sections of the road with patience). It was nice that parts of the island had breaks in the weather (varied by day) that we were able to take advantage of. We still never felt rushed as we did most things on our own schedule and found time to relax with a good meal and bottle of wine each night.

Great report.

It reminds me of a swap meet vendor. Everyone is nice to her because she says "prices are according to attitude" and then she laughs.

Maui Kai is such a nice nest to come home to.
