Road To Hana. Best Stops??

It is Pauls first trip to HI. My twentieth I would like to explore the Hana Hwy with him but I would prefer to pick the top 10 spots rather than stop at everyplace on the way. We will be taking a full day starting early 7ish. Any ideas? Aloha

Don't miss a stop at Black Sand Beach! We packed a picnic and had our lunch here. This is a beautiful place to take some great photographs. :)

Check out JC's (who is a DE) web site for the Northeast region (Hana). He has a nice list of things to see and why. hawaii-guide.com/maui/…maui_regions_and_areas

If you like to hike, the #1 pick would be the Pipiwai Trail - past Hana, at the park visitor's centre. Oheo Gulch is also at that location, and also a contender for #1 on the top 10 list.

We always stop at Waianapanapa -- I think that's the aforementioned black sandbeach. Beautiful views and photo ops. Great picnic spots -- a relaxing interlude in what ca be a grueling day of driving.

And Keane peninsula. That is the half way mark. Drive down to the shore. There is a beautiful church there, made from coral.

Another vote for the Pipiwai Trail. The bamboo forest in there is wonderful. One hour each way, give or take.

There is a rest stop along the way, but I can't remember where it is located. There are usually a few vendors set up selling trinkets. It has a small waterfall mauka, and restrooms and a parkish area where you can see mongooses running around, makai.

and, instead of driving back the same way you came, continue beyond hana and the 7 pools, and go all the way around the east and south side of the island.... it will take you about the same amount of time to get back to wherever as returning the same way via "the road to hana".... this road is less travelled, but offers some of the most spectacular scenery on the island....

Geez strangetripper, did you post that just hoping to get a show? If you are going to suggest people go this route, you should give them ALL THE PERTINENT INFORMATION. It could be money coming out of their pocket, not yours.

Going any further than Kipahulu is prohibited by your rental car agreement. Best thing to do is turn around after Lindbergh's grave and go back the same way you came.
