Maui Kai vs. larger resorts like Westin Villas, etc

This is our first trip to Maui...we are in our early 40's. This trip is a big deal and wondering about where we are staying. We have a beautiful condo booked at Maui Kai totally upgraded and we could almost jump in from our lanai! However,we like the the appeal of upper end resorts, this one is more private, small, pool is in back of the bldg because the bldg is so close to the water. I guess you could say we have champagne taste on a beer budget. Here's the question...is it worth it to buck up and pay more for like a Westin Condo, Honua Kai or similar or would you opt for the view and location? Or anyone stayed there and have thoughts? Thank You!

Who cares where the pool is..the ocean is right outside your window.

it depends on what you want and can afford, obviously.

we always stay at the maui kai and love it. it's definitely no frills...and that's exactly how we like it. very few if any screaming kids running arount, etc. the views are incredible and the sound of the waves will put you to sleep every night. the surf can get a bit loud, too actually, so we stay in as high a unit as possible.

we've viewed units in the honua kai and make no mistake...it's a beautiful place with great pools and duke's restaurant. very nice...but just not our style.

we use all the cash we 'save' by staying there to go on excursions, eat at all the great restaurants in the area and buy keepsakes.

hope this helps!

We love the Westin Villas but I have to say the older condos have spectacular "in your face" ocean views that you will not get at the Villas. You need to decide what is most important to you...views or pools.

The Maui Kai is a nice cement building that is very quiet.

My wife and I began staying at Maui Kai not long after our first visit 30 years ago. The owner was a friend of a friend and we stayed with her until she sold about 10 years ago. We're "as close to the water as possible" types and loved the place.

No experience with the upscale resorts mentioned, but we've become (next door) Mahana fans and you might want to give it consideration as an intermediate (imo) upgrade.

Don't know if you've rented a studio, but here are differences that favor Mahana: The pool is ocean front, there is a grassy area between the building & ocean that features plenty of chaise lounges (as I recall, there are approximately 6 ocean front lounges at Maui Kai), Mahana condos have in-unit washers and dryers and (a biggie for us) the lanais have glass panel partitions; better viewing than looing through the railings at Maui Kai. Also, some MK condos have expanded the living area by encroaching on the lanai. If this is something you would prefer to avoid, you might want to double check listing photos. One disadvantage of some Mahana condos is that there may be view obstruction by palm trees. This condition is possibly of more concern between floors 7 & 9 I believe.

Now, if you've rented a one bedroom, here is the major (imo!!!) advantage held by Mahana: the bedrooms are ocean front. Also, the view from the living room is free of lanai furniture/railing obstruction with the lanai being situated adjacent to the bedroom.

This aerial photo is several years old, but depicts both Mahana & Maui Kai:
