Haleakala with the top down?

Hi all, Has anyone tried driving to the summit to see the sunrise with the top down the whole way? How brutal is the cold? I think it would be amazing to drive with all the stars overhead.

The cold is pretty brutal with no wind, so I would think you'd freeze yourself driving with the top down, unless you were very bundled up.

Only if you're part polar bear!

The day we went it was a mix of rain and sleet. Plus we had about 40 mile an hour winds. It was almost impossible to walk to the little viewing hut at the top. Which I might add was flooded becasue of all the rain. But by golly we'd come all that and we were going to brave the weather...no matter what! We went with a tour company so we had rain gear and ski gloves!

We saw just a sliver of sun, one of those that was so quick if you blinked you missed it.

I was disappointed and wanted to see that beauftul sunrise you see in the tour books.

Oh well, mother nature is a fickle lady!

If it's raining, the top goes up. The coldest I ever was in my life was at a Packer Game in Milwaukee with an easterly wind off Lake Michigan while it was raining and about 40 degrees. After three hours I literally could not feel my feet until we got home. Walking to the car, I thought I was going to sprain an ankle.
