Water conditions in early Feb

What are the ocean conditions likely to be in early February? I understand that it is a good time to see humpbacks but wonder about going out on a boat with my 4 year old if it will be high seas or rough surf.

Not sure if we will stay in West or South Maui, is one better than the other in this regard?

Surf will be calmer on the south shores during the winter months. The places where there will be high surf aren't generally places one would go out on a boat for whale watching. High or rough sea's will also depend on if there is a storm in the region. The best, most consistent ocean conditions will be found in south Maui in Feb.

You will see whales from shore in February. The big Whale Day celebration and parade are in Kihei in the middle of the month -- same time as the official whale count.
