I would learn Google Maps before you go to Hawaii, it is a great tool for planning.
Here are the results:
Google Maps says 2 hours to Hana, but that assumes no stops, no traffic. It is closer to 4 hours probably.Edited: 30 May 2013, 03:59
Thank you so much - will do - kids get angry that I am not versed in using the computer but trying. Thanks again.
For Road to Hana & Haleakala, add the times from the airport to Kihei (about 5 minutes from Kihei to Ma'alaea) and airport to either Hana or Haleakala. You have to go near the airport to get to either.
Tiny URL for above link:
Order the free Air Maui map. it is really nice.
Order the free travel planner for Maui. It has a similar driving chart to the one above.
I stay frequently in Maalaea; one of the things I like best about it is the central location with good access to easy routes. When you get a good map, study it awhile to understand the roads that are best to take for your destinations.
LAHAINA: About 15 minutes up Route 30, 25-30 minutes in normal traffic
IAO VALLEY: About 10 miles, the other direction on Route 30. 20 minutes or so. Takes you past the Tropical Plantation and Bailey House Museum, both good stops.
HALEAKALA, UPCOUNTRY, HANA: Cut across the isthmus on Route 380, the Kuihelani Highway. Shorter than going through Kihei. These are all long drives. My advice is to pick the one that interests you most. If you do all three on the same trip you will be spending a lot of time in the car. Your kids will probably be happier spending some of that time at a beach.
I like google maps too for planning our trips.
Just one note ... Scott's map to Haleakala is to the lower visitor's centre ... to get to the summit, add another 20-25 minutes: http://goo.gl/maps/2saJYEdited: 30 May 2013, 12:51
This chart will help some, http://www.mauigateway.com/Edited: 30 May 2013, 16:53
Well forget that, need to add http://www.mauigateway.com/~rw/driving.html
Your location is the best for easy road access on the island. We were just there and went by Maalea a lot!
here's some estimates
Lahaina and S Kihie- 15 min
Paia 25 min
Haleakala 2 hrs? Took awhile, it's not long just windy and slow. Have fun!
22 minutes to downtown Lahaina
Thank you all so much - first time in Hawaii and it can be a bit intimidating trying to plan timing etc. for excursions - thank you very much.
