The whales visit Hawaii between late November and early May. The big statewide Whale Count is in February. They seem to favor Maui and Big Island. You will see them easily from land -- no need to go out on a whale watching boat. Our friends' daughter and her fiance were kayaking in front of our Maui Kamaole condo last year and a curious baby whale checked them out by eye-hopping them first from one side and then from the other, after diving under their kayak. Great pictures!

Whale season generally runs from Dec-May. Since the calving season starts in mid-January, the peak is recognized from this point through March when populations are at their highest.

Agree about February being peak season, but disagree about the boat. We completely enjoyed the experience. The PWF staff was interesting and the whales at times actually swim right up to the boat (we had a mother ahd calf swim up and then under ours).

as long as they don't breach over your kayak, then I suppose that would be quite a thrill...
