Road to Hana but back via Haleakala - is this possible?

Looking at the map, it would be nice to combine the 2 must do's in a day (obviously a HUGE day). Can we combine the 2 at all?

Many thanks

Where would you be starting/ending? It would end up being about 7 hours of driving if you start/end in Kihei - more from the Kaanapali area. You would likely want to do all of your driving in daylight hours, which is approximately 12 (depends on when you're there), so that doesn't leave much time for sightseeing.

Much of the driving is going to be on winding and switchback roads....it would probably feel more like an endurance test that an enjoyable day of sightseeing. I would try to split the two up into two different days, or stay over in Hana and do Haleakala the following day.

if you keep going past hana its only about two and a half hours to the summit of haleakala. if you turn around it will take three and a half to four depending on traffic. plus the views and the contrast from the front are unreal.

Check with your rental car company as they prohibit travel on the east side to haleakala. Kihei car rental will rent a jeep that you could take on that road.

It's all beautiful so Enjoy!

It really does not save you time to go around the back way. To get back to the point to head back up to Haleakala it is about the same. And yes, rental cars companies do not cover you back there, so rent a jeep from Kihei car rental if you want to go that way because they are the only ones that do cover you. It takes a long time to drive the road to Hana....the 7 hours Susan says is basically if you just drive and don't stop to see anything. It is narrow, curvy and slow going. Going up Haleakala is not as bad, but curvy and slow as well. It is something you definitely want to do on 2 separate days.

The road to Hana is a long drive, but what you will see along that road is a BIG part of the experience. The town of Hana, the O'heo Gulch area, the Pipiwai Trail or Charles Lindburgh's grave should not be considered simply the destination, but part of the experience of the drive.

If you follow that drive by trying to visit Heleakala, you will have to spend most of your time in the car trying to complete the mileage and not enjoy the road.

As they say, you should stop and smell the flowers.

Can it be done? Yes.

Should it be done? No

All major rental car companies prohibit you from driving past Kipahulu on the southern route. We get this question from time to time and the consensus is always TOO much driving in one day.

As Iwj say's this drive is to be savored, not just a tick off a list. You don't want to do a "drive by" on the Hana Hwy!! A good trip to this area will take at least 12 hours from start to finish.

kahuli to hana about 65 miles hana to the road in kula (going the back way) where you turn to go up the mountain is about 40 miles and a lot straighter. way shorter.

But 15 miles difference, going around some blind curves on an unmaintained road does take a bit longer...and it goes against the rental contract. That's fine, Hawaiiandreams...we know from all your posts you do like to do the more dangerous or not advised things...that is fine for you. We still have a responsibility to let the OP know what they are getting into. And they shouldn't be doing both activities on the same day anyway if they really want to see anything.

hawaiiandreams ... per google maps, the distance is actually one mile shorter by going back on the RTH to Haleakala summit, from Hana.

This map gives both routes - look at "suggested routes" in the left column to see the comparison: http://goo.gl/maps/LcQST
