Best and most affordable helicopter tour/company

Hello,

Coming to Maui in early December and want to book a helicopter tour. There seems to be big price differences between different companies and tours. Can people please tell me from personal experience what tour they have been on, what it cost, and where it went, and most importantly if they loved it?? Some options of places they fly are found below:

SPT1 30 min. Tour - West Waui Mountains

PT2 45 min. Tour - Hana Haleakala

PT2 45 min. Tour - West maui/Molokai

PT3 60 min. Tour - Circle Island Tour

PT3 60 min. Tour - Wese Maui/Molokai

PT4 90 min. Tour - Deluxe East Maui with

Beach Landing

Thanks!

BUMP

Hoping Deb will find this one. She has used a company twice on Maui. I do know that the tour they wanted to do, just last month, couldn't go, because of the weather. So they went the other direction, west Maui and Molokai. It was the tour she had done previously, but it was the first time for her son.

She actually wrote about it in her blog. User name is letsgotohawaiiasap. But she has a lot of blogs, so you will have to find the right one! But then you will want to read all her blogs anyway, so make sure you have a pot of coffee brewing before you start ;o)

Best AND most affordable will require some degree of compromise. This is one of the more expensive excursions especially if you are a family of four.

We have been on a few helicopter tours over several of the Hawaiian islands and coastlines. There are a number of things to consider before you choose this excursion. First and most importantly is safety. Please know that although the safety record for helicopter companies operating in Hawaii is very good, you must be aware of the risks that exist. For this reason, we do not recommend that you fly when winds are high or visibility is low. If your risk tolerance allows, then you should be ready to experience one of the most stunning and in many cases the only way to see various parts of Hawaii’s tropical paradise.

The three companies we like best are Air Maui, Blue Hawaiian and Sunshine

Some other things to consider are the type of equipment you will be flying in. The two main helicopter types you will choose between are the Eco-Star and the A-Star. (Sunshine calls their ES a “WhisperStar) The Eco Star is the Cadillac of the scenic helicopter fleet. The ES is more spacious particularly for tall passengers, is quieter and has a higher percentage of glass that allows for superior viewing and picture taking. This of course comes at a price which is the next thing to consider. See discount info below.

Seating is also a factor to consider, front seats being the best. The typical seating arrangement places two passengers in front next to the pilot and four across in the back behind the pilot. Sunshine offers reserved front seats at a premium price.

If you are a Costco Member you can follow the link below to purchase Air Maui vouchers in advance. Currently the price of their 50 minute Molokai Sea Cliffs or Haleakala Tours is $189.99. Your Air Maui vouchers will be mailed to you so allow enough time for processing and mailing these to your home.

The discount vouchers are sometimes available at the Kahului Costco location

I didn't know you could pay more to reserve front seats.

From the trip reports I have read, they actually weigh you in the office, and seat you accordingly. Don't worry though, no one can see how much you weigh!

Sunshine is the only company with the "First Class" seat option. The others don't do it. Sunshine still has rules about how much the two in the front can weigh (total). They are an outstanding company. I have flown with them and Blue Hawaiian many times and wouldn't hesitate to fly with either one again.

We have flown Blue Hawaiian on Maui, Oahu and the Big Island and can highly reccomend them. Yes they are not the cheapest but they are brilliant at what they do...right down to the personalised DVD you can purchase of your own flight when you land.

We did the Maui Spectacular when on maui....it has a landing on a ranch part the way up on Haleakala with brilliant views out towards Molokini. They only take 4 people on that tour so its a little more expensive but everyone gets a window seat and they crack a bottle of bubbly at the remote landing spot....was the highlight of our trip.
