Car Rental Worthwhile in Maui?

We're staying at the Four Seasons at Wailea for a week, with our two kids (3 years old and 16 months). Putting aside airport pickup/dropoff (which we can arrange with the hotel), Is it worth the hassle of renting a car for sightseeing/activities on the island? Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Maui is the type of island that needs to be explored. It is small but even just a few miles can make a big difference. Do rent a car unless you plan on staying on hotel grounds the entire time.

You'll want the car. Without it you'll miss out on seeing the island.

Welcome to TripAdvisor and the Maui forum, Samuel_Klugarsh. I would not dream of visiting Maui - or any Hawaiian island - without renting a car. The islands are gorgeous and it would be such a shame to go all the way there and only experience one resort. Hawaii does not lend itself to the all-inclusive resort style where you stay on the resort only venturing out with a group from the hotel.

Of course, with little ones, you are far more likely to spend much of your time at the resort, but there are lovely coves and beaches you will want to see (Kapalua Bay comes to mind), the aquarium would delight your 3 year old, and the Maui Tropical Plantation was a big hit with our small children as well as for us (the tram ride is fun).

Often, first time visitors want to return. It's a great idea to explore other parts of Maui (in your case, Kaanapali and Lahaina areas, which are very popular) just in case you are one of the many who fall in love and revisit Maui over and over again!

Yes, agree with renting a car, even if you dont' use it often. We met a couple waiting at a restaurant in Kihei for a cab for over 30 minutes. Reserve it now, and continue to check prices before you go as they can fluctuate a lot. We started with Hawaii Discount Car rental but ended up changing direct to Alamo a week before to save $100 for the wk. Enjoy!

If you are a Costco member, check their website as well. DiscountHawaiiCarRental is also great. Just don't prepay, and keep checking, as embr suggests. A lot of us play this "game", and some people have saved as much as $600.00 from their first reservation. Just remember to cancel the preexisting reservation when you book a car at a new lower rate.

Rent a car at the airport (reserved) and keep it for your full trip. You will need it to explore the Island ... and I would want a car, anyway, when traveling with little kids.

Hawaii isn't the kind of place where folks just go and plotz for the full vacation.

Agree with everyone else. Rent a car. Public transit won't work, taxis to get around would bankrupt you and so unless you literally want to stay at the resort the entire time (to each his own, but in my opinion, to just go to a resort and spend the whole time there and miss the rest of the island would be a shame) you'll want a car.

Check into Kihei Rent A Car if you need a rental for just a couple days instead of all week. They will come and pick you up and take you to their lot that is close by.
