unopened jar of peanut butter & co. peanut butter

I am flying from Maui to Tokyo and don't know if an unopened jar of peanut butter is allowed in a checked bag. I know we can't bring pineapples back to Japan and peanut butter is made from nuts but this isn't locally homemade peanut butter but peanut butter bought at a grocery store. (I thought I heard you can't bring nuts out of the US) I saw on TSA's site that you can put peanut butter in checked bag but don't know where to find the "rules" for international flights.

I honestly don't know about the checked baggage, but I do remember once the TSA people asked if we had peanut butter in our sandwiches. We had our little cooler with us, and planned to eat them while in the waiting area, after security. Fortunately, it was ham in one, and chicken in the other, so we were able to hang on to our "dinner". We lost the little ice block though, as it had melted enough that they kept it.

Thanks, J0an123. We aren't leaving until Saturday morning so hopefully I can find my answer before then.

It's fine for the US, but you'll need to check Japan's laws/rules on imports.

Thanks, John60750. That makes it crystal clear. I just found this on Chicago's Japanese Embassy page and felt I was in the clear.

"Other Processed Foods

Items such as cookies, crackers, candies, cereals, dried noodles, etc., may be brought into Japan. Most types of nuts (with the exception of walnuts, which are prohibited) may be brought into Japan, particularly if they are salted, dried, or roasted."

I REALLY wanted to bring this peanut butter back with me as all they have in Tokyo stores are Skippy peanut butter.

Travelsforfun--I'm curious--was your peanut butter that was confiscated in a checked bag or carry on?

Hi Pugmama-san,

Sounds like you already have your answer but to confirm, you are indeed allowed to bring in jars of peanut butter to Japan. Thanks for traveling over seas with us! Sounds like a fun adventure.

Safe travels,

Lindsay N.

TSA will not allow peanut butter in amounts over 100ml in CARRY-ON luggage.

As to laws of Japan, check current laws, not 2010 articles, for updated info.
