Best Places to Stay and Snorkel from the Beach

Hi All.

We've never been to Hawaii and are looking for a resort or condo to stay at that has good snorkelling directly from the beach. We both really enjoy snorkelling but are not strong confident swimmers so we wear snorkel vests. Looking for some easy snorkelling.

Also a location that has a lot of amenities within walking distance.

Budget is pretty tight and we don't expect too much except that the place is clean and safe.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Rick & Liz

Without a night budget we can't be of much help. Time of year can also dictate where the best ocean conditions will be. What do you mean by " a lot of amenities"?

Makena Resort on Maui is on a wonderful beach for snorkeling

However, there are no restaurants or shopping within walking distance other than what the hotel provides.

It would be helpful if you would give a nightly accommodation budget

A lot of amenities, plus a tight budget, plus oceanfront snorkeling simply don't add up. Can you please tell us what you are looking to spend per night and when you are visiting?

Would like to find something for less than $150 per night , taxes included.

Is that possible?

Depends on when your trip is?

What are your travel dates? Winter and any time school is out in the USA will be more expensive. Valentine's Day, spring break (which varies), Easter, summer, Thanksgiving, Christmas... Hawaii is popular with families year round, but especially around major holidays.

Tax on a hotel room or condo is 13.416% in Maui, by the way, and condos often have minimum stay requirements and cleaning fees (and you usually have to pay tax on that cleaning fee).

Your budget is low and your location wants are high as mamma points out. But don't give up. I know you say you only need a clean place. The thing is, those great oceanfront locations have the nicer resorts built on them.

But you don't have to stay in a perfect location to have a great snorkeling vacation. Keep in mind that ocean conditions change seasonally and from day to day and even hour to hour. Most of us who enjoy snorkeling every day are prepared to take off in the car to wherever conditions will be good at that time. Though having good snorkeling out front is of course a plus, you can have a great trip with lots of snorkeling, staying in a less expensive area.

Take those taxes and fees into consideration, then take a look at mamma's link and also at VRBO. Put in some low season dates that might work for you. Look in Kihei, Honokowai, Kahana, maybe even Napili and see what you can come up with for condos that fit your budget. When you find some possibilities, put the links up here and people will help with the location, and where the nearest snorkeling will be. They'll give input on the properties that they have experience with. That's how this forum works best. I think you can find something in your budget that you'll be happy with.

I just remembered you said you are not strong swimmers. Would you like to be near a snorkeling area with lifeguards? Kamaole 1,2,3 Beaches in South Kihei may be your best bets. You may find condos within walking distance of those beaches in your price range. I don't know Kihei very well, but others who do may chime in.

Happy planning!

You might be able to find something in that price range but probably not with fee's and taxes included. Kihei, Maalaea and Honokawai would be where I would start looking.
