Must do when in Maui?

We are arriving in Maui on Feb. 23. We know we want to whale watch and snorkel and do some relaxing too! We ar two couples from Michigan that haven't ever been to Maui before. We are all 59yrs young :) We want to do a snorkel adventure but not be on a boat or the water all day. I have read comments about the Molokini and the Lanai trips. Are there great places on Maui that we can go in from the beach? We all have our own equipment and will have a rental car. We are staying at the Aston Kaanapali Shores, in a 2 bdrm condo. Anyone have suggestions where to get some groceries and what must do's are around that area? We only have 6 days there as we will have spent the first 4 days on Oahu. I know, it's not enough time! But it's all we have so want to make the most of it! Any info we can get from you all will be appreciated! Thanks so much! Mary

You can do a 2 hr whale watch from Lahaina Harbor or take a whale watch from the beach at Kannapali. Lani is going to be a longer day and Molokini probably half day. You can take a 3 hr snorkel boat trip off the beach and you will see whales as well. There is lots of beach snorkeling in your area as well a grocery shopping and restaurants.

You can Google Kaanapali "whale watch", "snorkel" "maui snorkel"

We have had good luck with Pacific Whale Foundation, Hawaii Ocean Project and Teralani.

Conditions can vary day to day but we have had good luck in Kapalua Bay at your end of the island for shore snorkeling, also airport beach park

Right across the street from the Ka'anapali Shores is a grocery store. You will find everything you need there.

Right hand side of this page, blue letters, the fifth one down is all about where to snorkel. Use the links, and you will find lots of other information for you as well.

Must do lists are different for different people. There are lots of activities you could do, hiking, ziplining, horse back riding, just driving.

If you like driving, I'd head up to Haleakala. You don't need to get up in the wee hours of the morning to see sunrise, just get up there. It is quite amazing. Sunset is another option, not nearly as crowded as the sunrise, but it will still be cold up there so dress appropriately if you decide this is a must do for your group.

The Road to Hana is another big one for lots of people. But it can easily turn into a 12 hour day. Lots to experience on the drive, enjoying waterfalls, and a hike through a bamboo forest from Oheo Gulch.

I enjoy Iao Valley as well, and given where you are staying, another nice drive is north to the blowhole.

Kapalua Coastal Trail is more of a walk than a hike, but it offers wonderful views. You can start that walk from Kapalua Bay. Kapalua Bay is a great place for snorkeling as well.

Have a wonderful time!

The easiest and closest for you would be doing whale watches from Kaanapali beach-

Trilogy http://www.sailtrilogy.com

Teralani, http://www.teralani.net

Or Gemini http://www.geminicharters.com

all great from there

or out of Lahaina...

Trilogy, http://www.sail trilogy.com

or Capatain Steve for a great raft watch. http://captainsteves.com

The Trilogy Lanai trip is fabulous..all day but worth it. There is great snorkeling from shore on Maui. Check out the link Joan mentioned. Right by you is Kahekili..the areas in front of the Westin Villas and up at Kapalua Bay. These areas should be great as long as there isn't a big swell at the time.

I'd drive past Kapalua and Honolua all the way to the Nakalele Blowhole for some fabulous views.

Try to experience the Road To Hana and a meal at Mama's Fish House. Have fun! :).

Reserve your whale watch and snorkel sail ... now! You are traveling during a very busy season, and some sails sell out quickly.

You can whale watch and snorkel. The whales are just out there. If you want a sail that focuses on whales, details ... then take a whale watch. But you can catch a snorkel sail off Ka'anapali ... and you will see whales. I recommend Trilogy for both kinds of sails ... and take the earliest you can of either.

If you have a day to spare, check out the great shore snorkeling in south Maui too. Especially if the surf isn't cooperating on the north/west shores. My favorites are Ulua in Wailea and Maluaka in Makena. You might also want to check out LaPerouse Bay in south Maui. Site of the last lava flow on Maui. Stark contrast of black lava against the beautiful blue ocean.
