Okay..thank you everyone..here is my question on Upcountry and Haleakala Park. I remember someone telling me that we can "visit" Upcountry and Haleakala Park the same day..logistically..though I was wondering...we are not going to make it for the sunrise...so I was wondering what is considered better part of day to visit?
Since we are staying in Wailea, and I think it takes 2.5 to 3 hours to get to the summit..in the guidebook said to past Kahului to Haleakala Highway to Route 377 to rt 378...with 2 young kids we don't plan to do serious hiking..so after we have visited Haleakala should we traverse down to visit Keokea and then drive up to Kula or should we just go directly to Makawao...we just love driving to see scenerie and was wondering what was the best scenery? I assume either case we can skip Paia (since we would go there for RTH trip) and return back past Kahului back down to Wailea...
Are the roads to Haleakala curvy like RTH? Is Upcountry okay to drive in the "dark"? like leaving Makawao around 5, 6pm? Is traffic bad at that time to go back to Wailea? I assume they are 2 lane roads in Upcountry?
