Weather concerns, Week of 08-04-14 through 08-13-2014

Folks are starting to read and hear about the coming storm (Iselle). It is currently a hurricane, but is expected to be a tropical storm by the time it reaches Hawaii. It's way too early to say if it will impact us much, but it is one that could have some nasty rain and wind IF it stays on its current path. That's a big if, since many times the storms veer away (thank goodness).

For those arriving later this week or early next week, I suggest checking the links below. Both will be the most accurate for Maui at any given time, in real time. Also check NOAA for long range discussions.

http://www.hawaiiweathertoday.com/maui.php and

https://www.facebook.com/MAUIWatch

As the week progresses, there will be plenty more posts made on the MauiWatch and Glenn's sites. They will be reliable and are good for getting the real picture, which most mainland or national sites aren't. By Wednesday we should have a good feel for how Maui may be affected by Iselle. Until then, it's pretty much a crapshoot!

Here are a couple more links. First, the National Weather Service in Honolulu:

http://www.prh.noaa.gov/hnl/

for Maui forecasts, use 96761 for the West side, and 96753 for Kihei/Wailea.

Second, the Pacific Hurricane Center:

http://www.prh.noaa.gov/cphc/

Third, the County of Maui's site (specific page about civil defense etc. items):

Here is a really good international weather web site that you can easily track the storms with actual satellite pictures and forecastes. Also has an app for download

Another great site is www.weatherunderground.com/tropical. They have all of the various computer models for any tropical storm, hurricane, etc.

Unfortunately, the current 5 day model shows it heading straight for the Islands as a tropical storm, but this always subject to change. Here's hoping for a change in course.

We were on Maui once and the eye was forecast to pass directly over Makena all we got was no trades and plenty of Vog.. Still lots of cooling water between the storm and the state so here's hoping it runs out of gas and all will be well

oh great... now I have to eat crow to hubby- I'd just prefer to be right! He was all worried and asked me about the weather before booking his golf tee time today because it was forcasted to be rainy and I reminded there was nearly a 50% chance of rain every day when we were on Kauai last year- and it was just in the morning for a short burst because that is what makes it green but it does not mean a day of rain.... We're not coming until after it should pass, but just the day after

Retriever, I wouldn't pluck the bird yet. Daniel was another one that was supposed to hit us dead on (might be the one John is thinking of), and it veered, then began to dissipate--- and we got nada from it as it went by.

I linked the local sites because they are Maui specific. Unfortunately, I have found other sites to be too broad many times.

Whatever happens , I hope folks will be vigilant about checking the weather and heeding warnings if there are any ( you listening Mr. Neal?). But I hope Iselle passes by with no incidents .

As of 5 AM our time, she is still pretty much on a track towards Hawaii. She is a Cat 4 storm now, which they predicted. They expect her to weaken around Wednesday, and they are also hoping/expecting her to be turned more to the north around then.
