car rental

how necessary is it to rent a car in maui? I plan on staying on the west side of the island but i'm not going to be able to rent a car because i'm only 24... by the way, this is for a 6 night honeymoon.

Some rental agencies rent to drivers 21/+ of age (subject to a surcharge). Personally, I would rent a car to see more of the island unless you plan the majority of time on the beach, in the resort and immediate surroundings.

They will hit you with a big surcharge for being under 25. So find the cheapest rental you can. Alamo (through Coscto) is about $100 for an SUV + another $25/day for being under $25. Weigh your options. If you are staying in Kaanapali, you could get away with not having a vehicle. Whalers Village offers shuttle service to Lahaina and Kapalua for a small fee and will take you to South Maui for $10 round trip. A car will allow you to see much of the island or you can go on a Roberts or Polynesian bus tour with 50 or 60 others to see the sights. If you don't have a Costco card, you can still check out the rates. I don't think you even need the card at the rental counter but I could be wrong.

Discount Hawaii Car Rental is your friend. They have deals with rental companies (usually Thrifty) that don't charge you a young drivers fee.

I cannot imagine going without a car. Too many places to see and things to do, rent a car.

My friend said the exact same thing. She didn't want to rent a car because of the expense. I have been to Maui twice in my life (this will be the third), my family has always rented a car because there is just so much to do and see. It also really depends, we have always stayed in Kihei, and were really glad we had the car. Have you thought about what you want to see and do, because you could also maybe try renting a car for 1 or 2 days?

With the cheap rates I'm finding through Costco, $140 for 7 days in a midsize. You should get a car even if you use it very little.

http://www.discounthawaiicarrental.com has a rate of $182 for 7 days economy and no young driver fees

I know this is your Honeymoon, but you really can't spend every second in bed ***wink***
