which luau in Maui?

I haven't been able to find much on the different luau's in West Maui. Can you help me with the differences?

For instance the Sheraton says they include arts & crafts - what are they talking about? Making them? The Royal Lahaina luau says the same.

Are they all huge - like 200 people or are there smaller ones?

Which ones are on the beach? How is the food at these 2 luau's? all suggestions appreciated.

My Husband and mom in law are going to Maui in April 2007, and the arts & crafts thing would be important to her. The food & setting to me. Are the shows pretty similar? Thanks ahead of time for sharing your experiences with me.

Would vote for Old Lahaina Luau. They also have arts and crafts for sale. The setting is lovely, on the beach and the food, drinks and show are good. Dusty will now write about the lack of fire knife dancer.

"How is the food" They are all buffet except the Feast of lei lei where they serve you. As to the quality, anytime you cook 200 meals at once do not expect it to be 5 stars. It is good but by no means gourmet.

The only one's I know of are near the water.

As for the shows, yes I would say they are similar.

Should you go to one? I think so. As far as I know the only place you can go to a luau is Hawaii and pretty much everyone I know has gone to at least one when they visited, if for no other reason than to say they did when they get back and people ask.

Most people think the luau will be like Holloywood has shown them over the years, they aren't but they can be fun.

A friend who worked in Maui for 2 years told me that luau's are overpriced and touristy, and that the best thing I could do would be to save my money for a nice dinner cruise, such as the Pacific Whale Foundation's sunset cruise. If I had to choose only one (a dinner cruise or luau) which is more bang for my buck?

I'd also vote for Old Lahaina Luau. I've never heard anything negative about them, and they are pretty authentic as far as I can tell.

Old Lahaina Luau by far the best of the bunch. I much preferred it when it was still at 505 Front St., it's gotten so large now, it's almost like the ones on Oahu, but still a good show.

Good question. We are considering The Drums of the Pacific. We thought are 4 1/2 year old would enjoy it and that we could walk from our hotel.

If it was just my dh and myself, I would like the Feast at Lele or Old Lahaina Luau. I know they are touristy but that is what we are and some things, like a luau are really Hawaiin and would add to our overall experience of Hawaii.

Just my thoughts.
