Like you, we want to do a kayak trip to the Sunken Island, but there is evidently not much interest in this forum about that activity. From my own research, and perhaps you already know some of this, you evidently rent a kayak at Twogoods Kayak and they give you a rack to put on your rental car to transport the kayak to the launch area. Again, from what I've read, you launch at a small beach adjacent to the Heeia Pier.

You also need to read the tide tables to make sure that you will be at the Sunken Island at or near low tide so that the island will "appear".

This is all that I know to this point. If you come across any more good info, please let me know.

If you are inexperienced kayakers, I would really think twice about doing this (I'm a kayak instructor). There are so many dangers involved when you know nothing about the area, the currents, the tides, sand bars, other boat traffic and the like, it's so easy for something fun to turn into something tragic.

Aside from that, if you are not proficient in loading/strapping kayaks on to cars using foam cradles, especially rental cars, you should give this some major thought. One slip and you could be shelling out some big bucks to a rental car company.

If this is something you really want to do, go with a tour, don't try to do it by yourself. It costs more, but it will be worth it.

If you are experienced kayakers, I'd still think twice, simply because of the issues surrounding transporting kayaks, if nothing else.

I rented a double kayak from Go Bananas on Kapahulu in downtown Honolulu close to Waikiki. Really nice, helpful people with excellent equipment. We launched from Heiwa Pier. Paddled through a half dozen showers. Had a great time.

If you have never been in a kayak or carried one on a car, this is little too ambitious for a first time event. Recommend you take a guided tour in that case. Will still be great fun. Alternatively Captain Bob takes a snorkle tour out to the sunken island.

We are planning to take the guided tour in Kailua Bay earlier in the week. Twogoods Kayak rental had no particular warnings about the Sunken Island trip except to check the tide tables to make sure it is visible. It seems quite interesting to be able to stand on a sandbar with water surrounding. No one gives guided kayak tours to the Sunken Island.

For the person who took the trip: What was your itinerary for the day? In other words, when did you get there and what did you do on the island? How long does it take to paddle out? Any other tips?
