Aloha. Only two days til I fly out to Oahu. Nice. I'm a keen runner and was wondering where the best places to go running around Oahu are. I'm staying at the WYland Waikiki.

There are really several nice places to run. When you check in, ask at the front desk about places to run. There may be some other folks at the hotel that you could run with. Chuck...

The two most popular routes for runners from Waikiki...

1. From the Wyland, head down Lewers St (at the side of the hotel) towards the Mountains, in a couple of blocks it dead-ends on Ala Wai Boulevard, cross the road and turn right along the canal.

Run down the canal towards Diamond Head and around Kapiolani Park, and back down the canal to where you started (or along Kalakaua Ave to Lewers St if you want a little change). Its about 3.5 miles.

To stretch it longer, turn up Monsaratt in the middle of the park and run around Diamond Head crater. There is some hill work there, but you can go up Monsaratt, it turns into Diamond Head Road and goes all the way around the crater and back to the far end of Kapiolani Park. This would add about three miles to the run.

2. Run to the canal and take a left, towards Downtown Honolulu. Go along the canal, it eventually drops you off on Ala Moana Blvd across from Ala Moana Beach Park. Run round the park and back down the canal to Lewers St and the Wyland. Its about three-plus miles.

If you want to extend it, keep going down Ala Moana Blvd past Ala Moana Park to Ward Street and then head towards the ocean and run around the Kakaako Waterfront Park (great place to run) before heading back to Waikiki. Adds another two to three miles to the route.

3. Another cool place to run around is the State and County government "campus" in the center of town, near the State Capitol. Its about 3.5 miles from the Wyland to Downtown.

4. You will see folks running and walking around Honolulu all over the place. It is a great town for it because it is mostly flat, quite narrow between the ocean and the mountains, and hard to get lost as landmarks are easily seen. Just remember to only cross the streets when you have the light, the police are in the middle of a huge anti-jaywalking surge, and the fine is now up to $122 or thereabouts.
