Pearl Harbor question

Plan on going to Pearl Harbor and visiting the Arizona, USS Missouri and Bowfin on our own. Can someone help with is it worthwhile to get the audio tour of any of these and is the tour of the Missouri better than just doing an audio tour or without either. Trying to decide if we should use audio tours or tours or just not bother. Please help.

MARCH08 ....

first of all the USS Missouri is in dry dock. You might want to check back the first of the year and get a clear date when work will be done.

Per my experience and what I tell people visiting the USS ARizona, pay the $5.00 and not waste time figuring what to do and what is next to be seen. The audio tour is numbered sequently and matched with the numbers on the exhibit in the museum. If for any reason that you must stop your audio tour and/or must report to the USS ARizona theater to begin your tour to the memorial, you can stop the audio tour, go to the theater and when you begin your shuttle to the memorial, turn on the audio tour to the portion that will cover the shuttle ride and memorial. When you return, you continue your museum tour at the number where you stopped to go to the USS Arizona tour.

I tell everyone that ask me, the $5.00 you pay for the audio tour is well worth the money for the simple reason that you come from far away and why leave not knowing what you saw and experienced.

As for the USS Missouri, don't know when you are coming, if for the reason the USS Missouri is open again, I highly recommend a tour with a tour guide. There are a couple tours that you may take with a guide. The guide will show, tell and escort you around the USS Missouri. Here you gain alot more than the people just merely walking around, again, no knowing what and where they are going and really missing out on small little things that are explained to you by the guide that made history during WWII.

Hope this helps .............

I agree with islekane. It is well worth the $5.00 charge to actually understand what you are seeing and the significance of things. It can be overwhelming otherwise.

Thank you Islekane!

Will be there in March. For Arizona will get the audio tour. For the Missouri, will get a tour. Sounds like there is more than one. Which would you suggest? What about the Bowfin?

Thanks.

I agree with everything said so far. I would recommend the chiefs tour. Absolutely fabulous tour with a knowledgable guide that takes you places that everyone else does not get to see. Highly recommended and worth the money.

The Chief's tour is great, the USS Bowfin you can do on your own, located right off the ticket box office and souvenir shop.

If you are going to do the USS Missouri if it is done, you might want to look into doing the combination tour of the USS Missouri and the Pacific Aviation Center. I did this tour and it is well worth the cost and time.

Total time for me was close to 4 1/2 hours.

we took one of the guided tours of the Missouri, and it was definitely worthwhile. You do see the command center which is not open to the public without a guide.

We wanted to take a docent tour of the Aviation museum, but by the time we got there, we were just too worn out to do it.

Do keep in mind, it makes for a pretty full day if you do all these things. We spent from 9AM till nearly 5PM to fit it all in, along with lunch at the Pacific Aviation musuem (which had the best cafe, I thought). Would have been good if we got there a little bit earlier than 9, perhaps. I think we arrived by 9:15, and were on the 10AM tour of the Arizona memorial.

I forgot....the Bowfin had an audio tour. That was pretty good. I think it may have been included in the price of the ticket.
