King Kamehameha Day Events in June

Hello

We will be on Ohau from the 9 – 15 June, visiting for the first time. Whilst reserching I noticed that there are a couple of King Kamehameha Day Events happening during our stay. Does anyone know:

1. On the 11th June will the shops and tourist attractions (the Iolani Palace and Mission House Museum in particular) still be open as normal as it is a state holiday? We would like to visit Downtown Honolulu this day to coincide with the Kamehameha Statue Lei Draping Ceremony.

2. Is the King Kamehameha Day Parade on 12th June worth seeing? We were planning to visit the Polynesian Cultural Centre that day.

Many thanks

The thing to watch for is the traffic on kalakaua gets block off during a parade. So if you are at a beachfront hotel be sure to get our of town early in the morning. Ask the bell guys, they should know the schedule

The only thing I can say is that it will be an experience to watch the Honolulu Fire Department and it's ladder truck with the fireman putting and laying the plumeria lei on King Kamehameha's arm on June 11th.

Are you driving to PCC or taking the noon time PCC tour bus? If you intend to drive, I say cancel and see the parade in full. Lots of activities on this day, check Oahu Guide and This Week magazine for schedules and time. Do PCC on Monday, as PCC is close on Sundays.

The better of two parade, the other being Aloha Week Festivals. Kam Parade begins at the Kam statue, continues down Ala Moana to Kalakaua and then to Kapiolani Park.

Some thing to see for visitors. Use lots of sun screen and bring your camera's.

And if you really want a great olfactory sensation....

Head down to the Kamehameha statue on the night after the lei ceremony. the fragrances from the flowers are incredible and intoxicating, wafting on the trade winds.

Plus, walking around the Capital District campus at night is a wonderful experience not found in other major cities. Totally safe, well lit, clean and impressive; one of the most beautiful and least visited places in the islands.
