My 13 y/o daughter and I will be visiting Oahu mid Feb 2011. I was thinking that a fun thing to do one day would be to drive up to the North Shore to see the waves. However, I would guess I would need to check surf reports to decide which day to go, and I'm not exactly sure what to look for. How big would you say the waves need to be to be "big?" This is obviously going to be subjective, but I was hoping for some advice. We were not planning to swim, but I think she would like to see the waves one day. We have been to Kauai a couple of times before, but never really went looking for waves (had younger kids with us then). Also, where would the best beach be for this? Would like to see surfing if possible but would also like to avoid huge crowds.
I grew up on the East Coast, so am used to the ocean, but we just went to the beach without knowing how big the waves were, so I don't really have much of a comparison. DD has grown up in the Midwest, so has only spent time at the ocean when we go on beach vacations.
A semi-related question, I was also thinking of going to the Polynesian Cultural Center on the same day. Does that need to be booked in advance, or can we just go on whatever day we decide the waves are better?
Thanks for your help.
