Surfing in Waikiki/North Shore

My son-in-law had his first surf lesson in Waikiki in December and loved it so much! The problem was that we had packed the first few days of our stay with so many activities that he was only able to surf the last few days--and the surf those days was less than optimal (no waves). We're thinking about visiting again in May 2012 and wondering what the waves are like in Waikiki vs. North Shore. We're also considering Maui, but I read some articles that suggest that surfing is more dangerous there. Feedback?

Aloha,

The north shore of Oahu is for the most part flat during May.

The south shore is where you want to be in.

This year, May has been a good month for surfing

Waikiki is a safe area with so many surf spots that novice and expert can always find a wave to ride.

I would say that the summer surf is at it's best between June and September , with May being the start of it all, this year being a good one.

Aloha

Our son took surf lessons last summer in Lahaina on Maui - he is an intermediate surfer and really enjoyed the 2-hr private lesson. He made great progress and is eager to get back in the water this summer here in California. We went through mauisurfclinics.com.

As jet said above, the north shore will be a waste of time from a surfing perspective. Stay in Waikiki and you will most likely have a much better chance for waves that are "lesson" friendly.

Aloha,

I would take the surf lessons in Waikiki.

Also, check out the outrigger canoe rides, surfing the waves on the canoe is really a lot of fun and cheap too.

Thanks!

This sounds pretty fun. We didn't think of the canoe rides until you have mentioned. We have two chiledren with usm, they both are 12; they would love it. Do you have a recommend place?
