Snorkeling in October

Hi all,

We (2 adults) will be in Oahu in mid-October, staying 5 nights in Waikiki and 2 nights in Kaneohe.

If we were to prioritize our snorkeling, which spots are best? I've heard mixed reviews of Hanuuma, and was unsure whether Sharks Cove is a good snorkeling option outside of summer?

We are also taking a 2 hour cat ride that will have some snorkeling; not sure where.

Thanks for the help!

Your chances of snorkeling at Shark's Cove in mid October are slim. The north shore is one of the best places on Oahu, just not in late fall or winter!! Hanauma Bay is ok, but compared to other places the snorkeling is mediocre. That said, it could be the best place at the time you are coming!! Keep your eye on the surf report, anything that says flat to about 2-3 feet will be ok for snorkeling, if you are experienced, if not, nothing over about a foot!!

You may want to check out the MLCD (marine life conservation district) in Waikiki. It is located basically at Queen's Beach. Surf should be close to flat and there is an amazing number of fish out there.

You could also try some places on the windward side, just be careful because during the winter months, when the wind is blowing there can be Portuguese man o war.

Electric Beach on the leeward side is a great spot but then again, subject to hugh swells in the fall and winter months.

There is great snorkeling in Kaneohe Bay, but you need a boat to get to the spots and need to know where the spots are.

There is (I think) a glass bottom boat that goes out of Heeia Pier, and there are some snorkeling tours. Some of these links are old, so an advance phone call would be in order:

Possibly, but no one can really tell. I planned a snorkeling event for the 1st weekend in Oct. last year at Shark's Cove, had to cancel due to 9 foot waves. Our last snorkeling adventure up there this year will be no later than the middle of September.
