North Shore Beaches—“Off –Season”—What are they good for?

My impression is that in the winter (Dec-April?) the north shore beaches are great for expert surfers and (for the rest of us) for watching the surf and the expert surfers.

We will probably be in Oahu in October; what are the north shore beaches like then? Are they placid? Are they good for boogie boarding/body surfing for ordinary folks, or is the south shore still best for us? Is the surf still impressive for spectating?

October surf on the north shore is a bit unpredictable. The winter swells are beginning to pick up and you could get some high surf...it can also be pretty flat or something in between. If it's flat, you can go snorkeling at Pupukea (Shark's Cove) or jump off the rock at Waimea. If the waves are high, be cautious.

We've had to cancel so many snorkeling trips to the north shore in October, we don't plan on it anymore. Just be spontaneous when it comes to snorkeling up there, when the surf is down, go!! I wouldn't call the surf impressive at this time. Just annoying to those of us who want to be in the water but can't!! Might make for some good boogie boarding though!!
