we are coming over from australia for a holiday. We would love to go to a market that reflects the culture and community. I am looking for local craft and products as well as souveneers.

Where would be the best place/s to go?

Made in Hawaii and the ABC Stores carry Hawaii-made goods, but also ALOT from China and Southeast Asia ... so always, always look to see the origin of the products.

I like Sand People. http://sandpeople.com/

Basically ... just keep your eyes open and read the tags. Even the department stores carry Hawaiian made shirts and other clothing, hats.

If you type "souvenirs" in the search box for the Oahu Forum, you will see that there are several great threads with ideas.

For heirloom jewelry, Philip Rickard is great - but you will see hand crafted articles throughout many stores.

This is just a tiny list.

Oh, and here is a calendar of craft fairs. I'm sure it is not conclusive, but may be helpful. I like the Waikiki Artfest in Kapiolani Park - Diamond Head end of Waikiki.

Try some Farmers' Markets. Good local products and produce.

The Kapiolani Community College one is pretty good (Saturdays). It's right next to Diamond Head if you plan to do the hike.
