Help with a plan

Hi there,

We are currently at Aulani and have four full days left. We would like to have two days to enjoy Aulani itself but we have a few things we would like to fit in.

Surfing on the north shore with north shore girls, snorkelling hanauma bay, dole pineapple farm,

Haleiwa, Laniakea Beach to hopefully see the sea turtles. Would anyone be able to suggest a day plan for visiting. We seem to struggle getting our bearings here.

We have a planned breakfast tomorrow at 8:30 until 10 and then dinner reservations at 6:00. Also, the FIA FIA luau on Tuesday so need to work around those times.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Thanks!

Well, the Dole Plantation is a tourist trap ... not a destination to plan your vacation around. It's a giant T-shirt shop with some attractions for kids. OK for a bathroom break and a cold drink. Yes, the guidebooks hype it. Sorry.

Hanauma Bay ... it's a bit of a drive from Ko'Olina. Hanauma Bay is best in the morning, but traffic will be nasty. Are you going to another Island? I don't recall. If you are going to Maui or the Big Island, I would snorkel there instead.

Also - please remind us who "we" is. Have you spent any time on Waikiki? Bishop Museum? Pearl Harbor? Iolani Palace.

We are my husband, daughter and myself. Daughter is 16. We know the Dole plantation is a tourist trap but we are tourists so it's ok for us. I was really just trying to figure out the best timing for the things we have listed. We spent three days in Waikiki at the Sheraton ( which was fabulous....even if a bit big-lol).

We want to do the north shore surf girls, Dole and Laniakea beach. Is this doable in one day? Next day we could do Hanauma Bay if we leave here at 5:30. What would be the best way to get there. We know traffic will be crazy but one way must be better than another?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, your plan of Dole, Lanaikea, North Shore surfing will be a day trip. Go to Hanauma Bay the next day and choose one of the circle island tours for some pretty views and perhaps visit a beach or two along the way. I like to do these types of excursions on weekdays.

What time is your surf lesson with North Shore Surf girls? You need to check that first to see if it's doable. Dole can be done either on the way there or back since it's right on the Kamehameha, but it closes at 5:30. Allow about an 45 minutes there if you just want to look and get a Dole whip, or an hour plus if you are getting tickets for the train ride or maze. Don't try to do the train around lunch time, the each alternate shutting down for a break and it makes the lines and waits very long. North Shore Surf Girls is right in Haleiwa, and you would have lots of options there for lunch afterwards. Laniakea Beach is just a bit north of there on the Kam Highway, so again you can head up there either before or after the surf lesson. Just leave more time than you think you'll need, but it's easily doable.

No reason you can't do Hanauma Bay on a separate day, as long as it's not a Tuesday when they are closed. I think the H1 is the quickest way to get there if it's not rush hour. If the lot is full when you get there, just drive around and explore some of the Windward Coast and come back when it's open. If you haven't been there before, you may want to check out Driving Tour 1 and follow it to the Halona Blowhole, Sandy Beach, the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail (fairly easy hike), and the Makapuu Tidepools, all in the area of Hanauma Bay. I also like the Kona Brewing Company in Koko Marina for a relaxed lunch overlooking the Marina.

Hanauma Bay is closed on Tuesday's. For the north shore, leave after 8:00am and take the H2 up. It should take you less than an hour to get to Haleiwa. Is this where the surfing lessons are? If so, book them for 9:30am then you will have time to explore some of the north shore beaches afterwards including Laniakea. Go to the Dole Plantation on your way back to the Aulani.

If you go to Hanauma Bay on Wednesday, don't leave early. You will be looking at wall to wall traffic between 5:30-8:00am. It will take you at least 1 1/2 to 2 hrs. just to get to Hanauma Bay through all that traffic. Wait until after 8:00am to leave if for some chance you get there and you can't get in, do a bit of site seeing for a couple of hours on that side of the island then try Hanauma again after lunch.
