Waikiki Car Rental Question for other Aussies

We have a convertible booked for 2 days in Waikiki with Thrifty Car Rental and I would like to know what other Aussies do regarding the insurance on rental cars. Our Credit Card has a $5,000 cover for excess up to that amount but doesn't mention normal car insurance and I doubt (haven't contacted them yet) our normal car insurance policy here at home would cover a rental car in US. Would appreciate any feedback especially from other Aussies who have travelled and rented cars in Hawaii. Thanks, Karen

Hi, your normal car insurance will definately not cover you. Your travel insurance should especially if you have a decent cover. Be wary of nrma type travel cover for things like car excess. You get what you pay for and that type of cover is very very basic. We've rented a couple of times through Alamo at their office up near ala moana. They have been fantastic. We did learn the hard way though about booking a mustang or camaro- most Aussies and even more so a lot of Asian visitors want them and they can be hard to get. Their websites will say that they are available but it's basically first in best dressed on the day of your booking. Ring them the day before your booking. Many places have people lined up early in the morning to get a mustang. That said, our dealings with car places were great. They were very friendly and helpful. The worst thing was actualy a very rude australian woman when we first walked in to one of the car rental offices!! Best of luck and enjoy, it's a magnificent place and the people are so great!

Check your rental policy. Some of the rental companies when you book online and have place of residence as Australia automatically add insurance..eg CDW or LDW.

We too have used Alamo once in Hawaii and three times on the Mainland. When looking at bookings click box Resident of Australia or got to .com.au rather than .com site it has insurances included works out cheaper than using .com site and adding insurance after.

Not 100% sure how credit card or travel insurance works but I think it would only cover the excess on a claim so if you elect not to take out CDW and something happens to car your up for the differance

thanks everyone for your replies. Have reserved a Mustang with Dollar through discounthawaii car rentals and it came in for the unbelievable price of $139 for two days and that includes insurance. Was a bit sceptical about the insurance so emailed them and have the confirmation in two emails so hope all is okay. Does anyone know how far their agency on Kalakaua (sp) is from the Waikiki Sand Villa or will they send a shuttle to pick us up? Thanks again, Karen
