Driving from Fes to Marrakech: suggestions?

We (me, my wife, our 10-year old son, and another couple) will have 2 weeks in Morocco in April, 7 days of which will be driving between Marrakech and Fes. Can anyone tell me approximate driving times between Fes and Merzouga, Merzouga and Ourzazate, and Ourzazate and Marrakech? Also, what places between Fes and Marrakech (other than Merzouga) are worth visiting (we don't have much time so we need to stick to the highlights)? Are there any riads/hotels that you can recommend along the way? Thanks in advance for your help!

We usually do Fes to Midelt, stay overnight, and then Midelt to Merzouga. You can do it all in one day if you leave early. Makes for a long day and that back way of going the roads aren't exactly the best. Nothing really between the two worth taking a lot of time to visit.

After you have done the overnight camel ride (I assume that is why you are going to Merzouga), drive through the Todra Gorge and Dades Valley on your way. You might want to spend a night in either. Both are interesting in their own way. Ouarzazate? Big city in the desert. You can see Ait Ben Haddou (lots of films done there) in the way to Marrakech. It's about 20 kms or so outside of Ouarzazate on the Marrakech road, right turn then 9 miles to the site. Worth a stop. Nice drive in April -- if the roses are blooming in Klaa m'Gouna (between Merzouga and Ouarzazate on the main road) makes for an interesting stop. Lots of rose oil products for sell year round in the village there.
