various questions

Hi, we leave for Morocco on Sun. 3 days in Marrakech, renting a car to drive to Zagora and take a desert trek, then onto Essouria for 3 days before returning to Marrakech. We have an 8 year old daughter and are staying in the Riad Saba in Marrakech. Will she be safe with us in the Medina? I am good at saying NO. Where is the smartest (safest and best rates) place to exchange money? Are we going to have any problems driving? Anything we should know about the airport, taxis, etc.? Thanks!

Your daughter will be safe with you, as children are very well tolerated in Moroccan society. The main thing for you is that things will be a lot different for your daughter and it may be a little overwhelming for her. For example, the way animals are treated here is different to America and Europe. In Morocco animals are there to work, they are not pets.

Currency exchange rates are the same at all banks. There are a number of banks in the medina. If you have Visa or Mastercard you can use the ATM's too.

The road from Marrakech to Zagora is a mountain road, very twisty in places. Have your wits about you, and make sure you have breakdown/accident assistance - just in case.

Marrakech airport is relatively small. The main thing to know is that you will have to complete an embarkation card when you arrive and leave.

As you are going to a riad I would recommend that you arrange an airport transfer with your riad. There are hundreds of riads in Marrakech and the taxi drivers can't be expected to know all of them!

Enjoy your time!

Thank you for the kind answers and advice! Another question: on our desert trek will we need full winter clothing? Are temps going below freezing? Really looking forward to the whole trip, but the desert especially!

I don't believe the temperature in the desert ever gets below freezing. It may be quite cool in the evenings and you will certainly need jackets which should not be a problem carrying around since you have a rental car.

Your daughter will certainly be safe in the medina. There can sometimes be a LOT of people there, so just keep her close to you so that you don't accidentally get separated.

Rate of money exchange is the same everywhere. Use ATMs when possible and don't carry a lot of cash. There are a lot of ATMs around the medina. I don't think there will be too many in Zagora so I would take some cash when you go there.

You shouldn't have any problems driving as long as there isn't a snow storm as you go over the mountains. Don't try to drive them at night as it does get very cold and the roads can ice over. Take the mountains in the day time.

There will be a lot of people trying to "help" you at the airport. Get your bags and rental car as fast as possible. Driving can be a little erratic but you shouldn't have too many problems. There are a LOT of mopeds in Marrakech so drive carefully there.

Essaouira is beautiful and you can park the car overnight at the pay parking near the large square by the fish market. You can walk everywhere you need to go and there are men with carts who will take your bags for you from the parking lot to the place you are staying. That is well worth the price.
