Week long trip with 3 adults and 2 teens, Ideas?

We are arriving and departing from Marrakech around the 2nd week in April. I'm thinking: 3 nights in Marrakech, rent a car and drive to Imlil for 1, possibly 2, nights--do some hiking. Drive to Essaouira for 2 or 3 nights. Drive back to Marrakech for return home. Does this seem reasonable? How long is the drive from Essaouira to Marrakech? A friend suggested we go to Merzouga. Should we try?

I'm reading mixed reviews about hiring a driver, but leaning toward going on our own. Advice?

My daughters are 13 and 16, both good travelers, but I do like to have something we 'do' to break things up. We'll have the hiking in Imlil (sounds like we can find a guide if we need one) and maybe windsurfing in Essaouira. Is there anything else I should be looking at?

Any other advice for a first-time visitor? Thanks.

We were there in 2007 when our kids were 11 and 14. We did hire a driver and were glad we did as it allowed us to just sit back relax and enjoy things more. We absolutely loved our driver Zaid, and particularly enjoyed our conversations. I would strongly recommend going to Merzouga and spending a night in the desert - definitely the highlight of our trip.
