Well-known Arabic bookstores? Casablanca/Rabat/Fez/Marrakech

Hi,

We will be in these big cities: Casablanca, Rabat, Fez, and Marrakech.

We are looking for the names of some of the well-known bookstores that sell Arabic books. Basically what main bookstores locals go to buy books?

Thanks.

As no one has replied yet I'll offer a view, and it is very general. Maybe others can offer some view and info.

Morocco is not a great place for books, the Arabic books available tend to be text books or religious books. Most contemporary books tend to be in French. You do not generally see people reading books for pleasure and if you do it is more often in French.

Regarding bookshops, there are a few good one on the main street, Mohammed V, in Rabat. If you come out of the train station turn left and cross the road.

Fez does not really have any great bookshops, there is one on Hassan II, just below Place Florence, and another on Place 16 Novembre (behind the central Market). In the old medina there are a few booksellers towards the top end (Boujuloud end) of Talaa Saghira.

Sad to say, reading is not something that is very popular in Morocco. Books here are very expensive. There seem to be less and less booksellers each year. Here are links to some second-hand booksellers in Rabat and Casa which may be of interest to you.

This is one of - if not the - most popular bookshops (new books) in Casablanca, but from what I remember, most of their stock is French. However, they could certainly advise you where to buy Arabic books in Casa, I'm sure:

Carrefour des Livres

(Comptoir Marocain du Livre sarl)

rue des Landes (Maarif)

Angle rue Vignemale

Casablanca

SIbrahim and Zohor,

I am a little surprised that reading books in Arabic is not as popular.

Thanks so much for all the information you provided us. We will be taking a copy of this post with us to refer to when in Morocco.

In Marrakech libraire Chatr is on Avenue Mohammed V near to the petrol station, and there is another book shop opposite the cinema on Boulevard Zerktouni, as well as the libraire at Jemaa El Fna.

heresmyreply, Thanks for the information. We are staying close to Jemaa El Fna, so we should be able to locate the one over there easily.

Zohor, Thanks for the article. I took a cursory look. Printed it and will read it on the plane. I also think many do their reading on the internet these days. It is not necessarily books but reading nevertheless.
