still sick after return - any advice?

My daughter and I developed sudden GI symptoms three weeks ago while traveling around Morocco. The severe stomach/intestinal cramping, pain and diarrhea lasted a couple days and we then carried on with our trip. But after one week back, we still have constant mild stomach pain, nausea and intestinal cramps. My doctor has put me on Levaquin and Flagyl but I am having no response. Of course a coworker told me about a "friend of a friend" who returned with some horrible organism that was treated improperly and now can't be cured, so he's freaking me out. Any doctors or experienced travelers out there with any advice? Thanks!

Thank you wayne s! Second hand accounts and "my friend had..." stories are worse than useless. Seek proper medical advice. How often does this need to be said?! This is a travel forum not a medical one (although the internet is littered with them and probably do more harm than good.)

And what exactly is a "some sort of gut re-starter" Kate 88Uk? Sounds like witchcraft to me, or perhaps a reference to the discredited so called probiotics. As a microbiologist I can inform you that there are over tens of thousands of species of microflora in human intestines, most benign, even beneficial, but rarely pathogenic.

bladesboy, AI hotels have a bad reputation for reheated food wherever in the world. You are always better visiting a family owned establishment, not some kind of commercialised chain despite the price seeming to be better.

I often qualify my comments by saying "this is my opinion" but on this occasion these are the facts.

My fella was prescribed the tablets on the NHS....the NHS don’t do witchcraft, just medically tried and tested drugs thank the lord! I don’t know what they were (it wasn’t a probiotic) but they were defiantly for bad guts and they defiantly did the trick. They’re apparently used when large doses of antibiotics (or a dose of dysentery etc) ruin the fine balance of the gut.

Again worse than useless Kate88Uk. If you don't know what tablet "your fella" was proscribed on the NHS then why report it?

I assume you meant definitely (twice) and not defiantly. Or perhaps not. A shame because your posts are usually very accurate and informative. Also do you know what fellah means in Arabic?

I repeat (I feel by now ad nauseum), if in gastro-intestinal distress visit your health professional. The internet is not the solution to ANY health problem.
