Itinerary help

Hi there,

Some friends and I are looking at morocco in feb/march 2013. Some rough ideas of an itinerary (excluding timeframe as we are yet to figure this out) is as follows:

Fly into Fes

From Marrakech, take a Desert tour (4 days/3nights which covers Dades Gorge, Todra Gorge, Ouarzazate and Merzouga,

Marrakech to Essouira

Fly out from Marrakech

Given the desert tour we are looking at, is it worthwhile going via Erfoud from Fes, or will be just be covering the same ground twice?

Would this route also be doable with public transport (minus the desert tour)?

Erfoud, in my opinion, is the odd one out here. Fes to Marrakech is achieved quickest by train (just over seven hours) and Marrakech to Essaouira by the coach company Supratours. As you have not settled on your timeframe yet it is difficult to advise as to other options but as previous visitors to Morocco will agree it is not a country to be hurried! Certainly end of February/beginning of March is a great time to visit.

(You may wish to consider a day trip from Fes to visit the Roman ruins of Volubilis, the fascinating town of Moulay Idriss and the small Imperial city of Meknes.) Happy planning!

Thanks very much. I would anticipate that we will be there for about 2 weeks and will add our day trip suggestion to the list!

In my opinion you should buy your desert tour while you're either in Ouarzazate or Erfoud, since you'll just pass the same places twice.

There are bus companies that cross all these locations, either supratours or ctm are ok.

ouarzazate can be a nice place for desert departure, and you could do the loop, ouarzazate - boumalne dades, gorges du todra, erg chebbi dunes, nkob, agdz, back to ouarzazate.

you can hire either a 4x4 or a grand taxi to do so.

grand taxi costs 600 dirhams per day including driver + fuel.

4x4 will cost from 1100 dirhams until 1200 dirhams depending the age of the car and quality of the service provided.

watch out because other companies giving you 800 dirhams transportation will just offer you an old vehicle plus sometime they start charging you for the fuel half the way.

stay in marrakech, take the bus to essaouira. you can take the bus to ouarzazate which will cross marrakech.

you could do 1 or 2 nights in ouarzazate and go to unesco ait ben haddou, fint oasis, taourirt kasbah, film studios;

hire transportation from now:

1 night in Boulmane Dades in vallee des figues and monkey fingers valley;

2 nights in Erg Chebbi dunes and go for camel trek and possible combine one night hotel and one night desert camp;

1 night Nkob the 45 casbah village under the palm grove and saghrou mountains;

back to ouarzazate.

there is also the possibility of hiring a car for the whole trip and go from marrakech to essaouira, down to agadir, tafroute, taroudant, ouarzazate, agdz, nkob, rissani, erg chebbi dunes, gorges du todra, boumalne dades, back to marrakech.

this is a nice and interesting loop.

good luck and enjoy south morocco.

If you fly to Fes stay and explore that area, it is much to see there. Visit also Meknes, Volubilis, Moulay Idriss as Pilobolus recommends.

After Fes you can take Supratour bus overnight and at morning you are in Erg Chebbi there you can do your desert trip.

Book some accommodation in advance so you not need search something first after your arrival there. They can pick up you on bus station and arrange camel trek into sand dunes with overnight there. I suggest you too to stay there 2 nights because it is much to see in Erg Chebbi.

Then you can take the bus at morning and go off in Tinerhir for to visit Todra Gorge and Dades. Find some accommodation there and they help you with arrange the trip to Dades and Todra Gorge. You can stay there 2 nights so you can explore it properly.

Then you can take the bus to Ouarzazate and stay overnight there too, or in Ait BenHaddou. To Ait BenHaddou you can take grand taxi from Ouarzazate.

And after that bus again to Marrakech.
