By plane. See what expedia.com offers - here is a selection:

The airlines shown have clickable logos to their websides.

By plane, minimum adventure, maximum impact.

By train & ferry, maximum adventure, and you minimise your impact:

1) Book a train from Barcelona to Algeciras at www.renfe.com (of if you have any problems with card processing, www.raileurope-world.com) from around €50. Booking opens 2-3 months ahead, book early for the cheapest Promo or Promo+ fares.

You'd take the 08:30 AVE high-speed train right across Spain, changing onto a local train at Antequerra Santa Ana for the last very scenic bit to Algeciras, arriving 17:40.

2) Then you can take an evening ferry to Tangier. I'd book Traifa to Tangier with FRS, www.frs.es from around €30. They run a free bus transfer from Algeciras ferry terminal (5-10 min walk from the station) an hour before each ferry sails from Tarifa.

The actual crossing takes 35 minutes, and crossing the Straits of Gibraltar is a real experience, one of the Great Ferry Crossings of the world, I think. You'll see the two Pillars of Hercules on either side, one the distinctive Rock of Gibraltar, the other Jebel Musa or Monte Hacho.

3) In Tangier, stay at the faded and fabulous Continental Hotel, you'll see it high on the side of the medina as you walk from the ferry terminal into town - it's just 10 min walk from the ferry. This hotel is a travellers' favourite, inexpensive, very atmospheric, straight out of an Agatha Christie story. See tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g293737-d3173…

4) Next morning, take the 0935 air-conditioned train from Tangier Ville station to Rabat arriving 13:09, fare around 120 dirhams (€11) in 2nd class (which cannot sell out, just buy at the station). You can check times and fares at www.oncf.ma
