gambling casinos in morocco & semana santa

Hi - I came across some sites on the internet that actually list gambling casinos in various cities in Morocco. I was quite surprised, as I didn't think gambling would be allowed in a predominantly Muslim country. Has anyone ever been to these casinos? Any you'd recommend - or differences from American casinos to talk about?

Also, I will be traveling through Morocco around Easter time, and wondered about the semana santa celebrations: anyplace in particular to see such celebrations?

Thanks.

Semana Santa is a Spanish Catholic Church celebration, so you won't see any.

Yes there are casinos in Morocco in Casablanca, Agadir, Marrakech and I think Tanger. Wouldn't recommend.

Thanks for replying Tim. Regarding Semana Santa, somewhere I read that in the north at that time, there are huge amounts of Spanish tourists that come... that's why I had inquired. Always like to see holidays/festivals, in other countries:-). The post must have been mis-marked.

Re: the casinos - your comment that they are not recommended - on what reasons: safety? not similar to what I'm thinking of as a 'casino' - why do you not recommend?

thanks

Yes, it's a public holiday in Spain, so many Spanish visit Morocco, lots of 4x4 Clubs come over that week but they don't bring their Catholic celebrations with them. ;)

That I don't recommend shouldn't be read as I recommend against, just that I don't recommend for. Mind you, I visited Las Vegas a couple of times and managed to get away without spending even 24c in a slot machine. Morocco only allows casinos for tourists, it's not the sort of activity that enhances Moroccan well-being. If you want to go, then do so.

Thank you - this looks like a nicer casino than some that I had found in Casablanca... Some tourists collect magnets, or shot glasses, etc... I happen to like black jack, so I've tried to play at least a couple hands every I've gone, and have a collection of 'chips' - one from every casino I've traveled to:-)

Much appreciated.

I was also initially suprised to find casinos in Morocco, but similar to their attitude to alcohol you will find many Moroccans have a relatively liberal attitude to such traditional Islamic vices

the casino in Marrakech is tiny but does host some prestigious poker tournaments nowadays

the only decent casino is in the Mazagan resort in El Jadida - supposedly it is just for the use of tourists but there are usually more local Casaouis trying their luck than holidaymakers!
