A Honest opinion of Agadir ( as a first time visitor)

We arrived at the airport and the taxi driver didn't have a clue where our hotel was ! ( Aferni, less said about that the better )..............Our whole opinion of Agadir was very commercialised, not the "real" Morocco, try Tangier or Marrakesh for this!

We felt as though we were in an arabic version of any EU country, Spain Italy etc

Don't get me wrong we enjoyed our break but giving the weather, which was very hit and miss, locals (some of which were lovely, most trying to get every penny from you ) give me Egypt, Tunisia anytime....................Expected so much and got so little from Agadir.

Very Disappointed !

I guess at the end of the day the clue is in the fact that there are tons of package deals to this beach destination, although I guess that it's still a good base to see surrounding areas, as any resort can be.

Finally, some one who has given a realistic report of Agadir. I don’t like to slag it off too much on this forum as there are lots of people who have just booked to go and I don’t want to freak people out, but what I always want to tell them is……Don’t go, it’s totally rubbish, unrepresentative of the real Morocco and exists purely to extract cash out of tourists. If you want a beach, then stay in Europe. If you want exotic, then stay in Marrakesh. Agadir may as well be any crap beach resort in any other place in the world, and offers very little other than a mediocre beach (even the weather’s suspect!) All I have to say to prove this is that it’s got a British Pub!!

Kate88Uk, I enjoyed reading your opinion!!! After visited Morcocco and Agadir for many many years Ive found it to change for the worse every time I go - i dont go anymore!! I have posted honest reviews like yourself Aferni Hotel dreadful weather not great no culture food not great and was absolutely slated by a woman?? called sophie because I gave the few good points and the numerous negatives about this resort.. Try Essaouira or Mirleft great food nice people and you see the nice side of Morocco. Sorry you didnt have a great holiday.

The trouble with Agadir is that it has no soul. I didn't see it before the earthquake but first visited it some 12 years afterwards and found a fledgling Spanish Costa style resort--no culture, no history, no feeling of being in Morocco, surrounding countryside not that interesting...

Some of the hotels are dire conveyor-belt operations, and as Kate points out the resort even boasts a British pub.

There's only two good things going for the place

(1) it has an airport and flights from Europe

(2) the new motorway to Marrakech is now open so you can escape!

Hogmail - That’s why I sometimes hold back my comments about places like Agadir..….because I often get it in the neck for expressing my hatred for the place from people who think that it’s a good place to holiday and is representative of Morocco. I understand that some people think that Agadir is nice (especially if your used to holidaying in resorts in Spain and the like), but if you’ve spent any time in the rest of Morocco, you’d see how gross and harmful Agadir is.

I’m in total agreement about Essaouira and Mirleft. Both beautiful places that offer so much more without compromising on culture too much. Though I hear that most of the land around Mirleft has been bought up by Saudi land developers….so make the most of it while you can before they’re both covered by golf courses and package holiday hotels!!

The world is full of tourist places like Agadir. But thanks to google we all can investigate a bit prior to booking our holiday, yes?

If one looks for beach/hotel pool bar etc then one should not expect the real Morocco. It would be wise to be a little more adventorous and take a side step from all tourist guidebooks recommendations, you will be pleasantly surprised.

As for myself, I go there only when I need to, such as papers etc.

Happy holidays everyone!

I was disappointed when my post was shot down in flames on an earlier thread when speaking out about Agadir, and it is all very well to hedge around the fact that it is not a very good resort, and the weather is frequently rubbish, but people look to us to give them honest opinions and reviews so that they can then go on to book a resort, spending hard earned cash.

And if I had had the correct info prior to booking I would never have chosen Agadir.

Some insist that they return year on year but I can only imagine that is because they have family living there because there is no other possible draw.

Marrakech is fantastic, Tiznit is truly Moroccan, and the weather in both places is as 'hot' as you would expect North Africa to be, but Agadir is a waste of your wages.

I did think of Agadir as a destination for a break in late october, but have since ruled it out, not just because of comments on here but also on other travel sites. But must speak out in defence of Spain, which gets a poor rep in general and has had Agadir compared to it's costas. True, there are some awful resorts in Spain, but there are equally some truly wonderful, unspoilt, ones, and I would say that there are not many places that can rival the Andalucian/ Granada, region, with it's breathtaking sierras, the Alhambra, and

unspoilt Spanish pueblos, or the cities of Barcelona and Seville. Just as Agadir is not representative of Morocco, resorts like Benidorm are not representative of Spain.

Betty Boo - I apologise for comparing Agadir to Spain. Your right, Spain has some stunning places on the coast (as does Morocco). But, lets not tell everyone about them so they don’t go the way of the Costa Del Sol and the rest of those nasty places!

In fact, lets keep telling everyone that Agadir’s great and defiantly worth a 2 week resort stay, could stop the rest of Morocco secoming to the same resort/golf course hell!!
