A week in Marrakech

Hi,

My girlfriend and I will be going to Marrakech in a couple of weeks for a week stay. So far we have nothing planned as yet and thus need some suggestion as to what activities to look out for. Nothing too extreme though!

Thanks!

TA has a lot of useful info, try this link which takes you to the Things To Do page. Click on anything which looks interesting and read.

There is also a useful search facility just above the forum posts. You type in a query and up come the relevant posts which can then be sorted by date order to get the most recent posts.

The classic "desert overnight" is a must do - touristy as it may be :) Nothing beats riding a camel, and the sand dunes, a good tagine dinner with your Berber guides, and then sleeping under a millions stars...sigh! Incredible experience! :) Have fun!

We did a cooking course (not in Marrakech, in Essaouira), but we really enjoyed it - there are plenty of options to do that in Marrakech.

WolrdTravellinGal - the OP is only in Marrakech for a week so it may not be long enough to do the desert trip which takes up at least 4 days.

Technically, you can do it in three days but it is pretty pointless to do it in such a short time as you'd end up with two days of nothing but driving for 12 hours.

Matthew, there are lots of places to visit and things to do in Marrakech but don't forget to spend some time just enjoying being there. The joy of the city is being surrounded by noise and dust and smells and listening to the muezzins' call to prayer. Once you are there, just slow down and enjoy every moment for itself. There are ridiculous guidebooks that show you timed walking routes around the city - ignore these.

As john says, check out the "Things To Do" link tripadvisor.co.uk/Attractions-g293734-Activi… and you will find everything from massage to camel rides, quad biking to cookery courses. There are also hot air balloon rides over the city for those with plenty of cash.

Day trips to Ourika Valley, Imlil, Setti Fatma etc are easy to arrange and well worth it. You really won't be short of things to do and will probably find that a week is nowhere near long enough!

Enjoy!

Things we enjoyed in Marrakech:-

Wondering through the marjorelle gardens, the attached Berber museum and drinking expensive tea in the courtyard cafe.

Guided horse and cart ride around the city.

7 course Evening meal and cocktails at sunset on the rooftop terrace of maison MK.

The main square through the day for refreshing orange juice and at night to experience the atmosphere/street food.

A couple of hours getting lost in the souks.

A full day cookery course and lunch at Faim d'epices (amazing value for money).

A day chilling out at our hotel pool.

We were only in Marrakech for 3 days! We squeezed a lot in!

I have just come back from a week in Marrakech. We stayed in a Riad so visited the souks and square often, took a caleche to the Majorelle Gardens (they were stunning), did a day trip to the Atlas Mountains, and visited all the major sites in the city - Ali Ben Youssef Medersa, Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs , Maison Tiskiwin and walked around the Koutoubia Mosque.

samlouise20, we are looking at being in Marrakech for a week also, like the original poster. If you had had one or two more days in the city, what would you have wanted to do? Or would more days in the city be too much? We were thinking about maybe doing a day trip to explore somewhere outside of the city. Which would you recommend, more time in Marrakech or is 3 days plenty for the city?

Thank you!

Be sure and also visit Badi Palace and the Saadian tombs. With a whole week I would include a day trip to the High Atlas Mtns. and possibly a daytrip to Essouria (that is about 2.5 hr drive). The highlight of our trip was our time in the Sahara desert, but too far to do as a daytrip. Here is a link to my trip report a long with pictures:
