Morocco itinerary

Hi,

Trying to plan our 10-12 day trip and overwhelmed by all the amazing choices!

Is there an area closer to Marrakech to experience the dunes than the Erg Chigaga or Erg Chebbi? I'm not sure the winding road and the 10 hour drive are for us but I would love to see the desert and sleep in a Berber tent. Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

we did a 12 night adventure of morocco..3 nights in fes..one night near the ziz valley..hiked the ziz the next day, heaven, 1 night in the desert, in berber camp (fabulous dinner and we were the only ones...clean crisp white sheets , what in the desert!!) 1 in skoura (would have loved to stay there longer) 3 nights in essaouira, and 3 nights in marrakech. we had a driver and guides in fes, ziz valley and marrakech..only made us want more!! what a wonderful country, so diverse, historical...just fabulous.

you will have a great time!

But that is not a real Desert, give it more time to do it to either the Erg Chebbi or the Erg Cheggaga much better if you have time, as you will see and experience as much as possible in 3 - 4 days.

Good Luck.

Did you book your driver and guide locally or from the Internet? Planning to go to Marrakesh in April.

Agreed, the Agafay desert isn't a real desert, but Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigga aren't desert either, technically they are relatively small sections of sand dunes in an otherwise semi-arid 'pre-Saharan steppes' environment.

Of course, the locals in their goofy turbans will tell you the dunes are part of the Sahara but you only have to glance at the Michelin 741 map (north west Africa) to realise this isn't true.

Although some of the grand ergs in the Sahara are massive—think in terms of stretching from Agadir to Fes—the majority of the sahara is hamada (stony surface).

Yes, I am agree with Tim. The desert is mostly hamada and only something about 20% are ergs = sand dunes. So if you have not much time but wish to have a little imagination of the desert, you can go to Agafay desert.

To go to Erg Chebbi or Chigaga you need at least 4-5days if you want to enjoy it really, not only just there but even of the way.

We are considering the following itinerary:

Tigme Tagadert 2 nights

La Pause 2 nights

Villa des Orangers Marrakech 3 nights

La Sultana Oualida 2 nights

Riad les Deux Tours 1 night

Any input or opinions welcomed...

Thanks for all your expertise!
