My BF and I went this year. I would most definitely hire a guide (really cheap). They keep people from hassling you. The moment off the ferry, they swarm you, take your pick. We had a lovely guide, Majid and he took us everywhere we wanted to go. I recommend having lunch at the Mamounia Palace. It's upstairs and there are musicians and a lovely view off the balcony (elegant but cheap). We went with the vegetarian entree, quite good with couscous, was served with a vegetable soup and a sugar cookie to end. It was said that the Borne Ultimatum crew ate there often. You must go to Cafe de Paris and have a coffee or mint tea. There is a pasty shop next door and it is so lovely inside, nicest place I saw in Tangier. Apparently, women from there aren't allowed unless escorted (don't know if that is true) so I got lots of looks but it was SO worth it. Enjoy!

Glad you had a good time in Tangier.

Women can go unescorted to Cafe de Paris.

Yes women can go to Cafe de Paris unescourted even Tangerians ladies, also I presume you mean by the pastry shop Cafe de Espanola, , and once again Tangerian, Moroccan and Western ladies can all go in by themselves

you don't need a guide at all. The only thing to visit when in Tangier is the casbah with the souks. Nothing to do at the beach, won't recommend. And not a lot too see in the new town, it's just ..... a new town.
